Just posted it to my blog's fb page - disturbing but very important info. A friend pointed out that the 4th harness looks suspiciously like a Kurgo harness...

I was hoping they would then show me a harness that didn't kill the dog :(

It's a shame we can't know what they are though, it would be helpful. I think perhaps crates are the way to go when possible.

Yeah, somebody on a Facebook group I belong to also commented that they are pretty sure the 4th one is the Kurgo...
They got 12 different harnesses, are they going to test the other ones? I expect the results would be the same but it would be interesting to see them all tested.

I just use crates even thought those are probably just going to break in an accident. A friend of mine fell asleep and rolled his suburban a couple times and had his dog with him in a crate. Woke up with the dog standing over him and he wondered who had a dog that looked just like Fero, then realized it was his and couldn't figure out how he was out of his crate.

Luckily everyone but the vehicle was ok and we can all laugh about it now. Personally though I'll still stick with crates over those restraints. A dogs anatomy is different and I don't think the same concepts for restraint can be used fo them. The shoulders and chest make a horrible restraint point for such high forces, as evidenced by those tests.

I crate and don't crate depending on time and what dogs I am taking. I have 4 dogs and a prius so for now i can only fit one crate.

That said, I still get nervous about dogs being stuck in crates in car accidents for fear of fire.

... were any of those RuffRider harnesses? That's what I have (though 99% of the time I crate) so I'd be curious to see how those perform.

I can't watch the videos. I'm glad that someone is looking into this, and I really hope that at some point there are good options.

I'm not sure I understand how a crate would be safer for a dog, though (not a human passenger). I don't know of any crates built for dog safety (other than those stardogs has posted about before, which incidentally made me want to buy a new car so that I can get one when they're available!).

Consensus right now seems to be that, while the CPS folks don't name the brands, the first harness is a Bergan and the fourth is a Kurgo. No idea on the other two, but neither look like either a new or old style Roadie Ruff Rider. One looks vaguely like a Champion restraint but only very vaguely (maybe one of the Petsmart ones that have a similar style?).

I thiiink that the 12 harnesses mean 3 of each style since they needed multiples to test, not 12 different styles.

They do have plans to test crates as well btw!

I was going to say that I'm almost positive the first one is a burgan, looks like someone beat me to it. That's the harness I use for Bear...although now I'm hesitant to do so. Yet I'm not convinced a crate would be much better. The dog would still be hurled against it. The plastic ones could shatter, the metal ones could turn into skewers. Also, if the crate gets banged up enough, it could be hard to open. I could easily find something in my car to cut my dog out of a harness if need be. Cutting a dog out of a crate...that would be a little harder.

There really are disadvantages to every option out there currently. :( Several people I know carry bolt cutters in their cars just in case they have to cut their dogs out.

There are some really heavy duty car safe crates, but they are pretty much unrealistically expensive for most people. I know that the safety of our dogs means everything to us, but the crates I've seen that have been really successful at deflecting car impacts are around 2,000. I have 3 (soon to be 4) dogs in my house. No friggin' way. I don't even have that money, its not like I'm unwilling to spend it.

Those crates that were linked on Chaz awhile ago, weren't those in the $200 range? If so, could someone please dig that up?

I am so freaked out by these videos, I am never putting a seatbelt on my dogs again...

I seriously just bought my Bergan and now I'm considering just selling it on CL because I think it would do more harm than good. I hate the idea of crating her in the car, because I love her being able to be with us and be comfy, plus I hate having to lug crates and move them around and such.

Why can't they have affordable, practical and safe options?!

Wow, scary!!!!! I never even thought they could do MORE damage! Bodhi travels in the boot (trunk?).... I couldn't fit a crate in there.
