I'm sure there are other similar threads floating around here somewhere, but those were then and this is now!

Most of us have a preference, and either preference is the right one for us because.........well, because that's what we like! LOL

So please tell us which you prefer and why!

I'll start.

I prefer females because in my experience they are more grounded, stable, and down to earth. There isn't any 'macho bs' to deal with, no posturing, no billy bad@ss displays on walks, and no marking.

Males (in my experience) tend to be more clingy, more silly, and remain more puppy-ish throughout their life. For some people this is wonderful, not to me.......I want the puppy stage, then I want them to grow up, LOL

I know some females can mark, I haven't been around any. I know some females can be territorial and 'macho'.........again, haven't experienced any. I would imagine a lot depends on breed as well. These are sweeping statements and based on my experience growing up until now so that is why I feel the way I do.

I prefer females, for the most part, and based on my experience it's for no reason other than that males **** on EVERYTHING. I find no difference in how they work for me, but I've only technically owned, myself, one male dog, that being Crash, but I lived with Morrie before.

Your descriptions of males sound exactly like Rumor, and everything you say females don't do, she does. :p As soon as she realizes we're going for a walk, her mind goes "PEE ON ALL THE THINGS!"

Females all the way for me. I love/d my boys too, don't get me wrong, but I connect and click better with girls for some reason. The mushy, totally in love with you and worshipping attitude that my boys have had is a little much sometimes, haha. I find females think a little more (sometimes in mischevious and devious ways) which I like. I just have a lot more fun training them than I do males. And I like that they give me a little distance. As dober clingy as Keira is, she's still not as ooey gooey clingy to the point he might need a therapist as Ripley is. To be honest, a dog who rubs and self pets himself on every extended arm or foot or another dog can be a little nauseating sometimes.

I like that girls grow up quicker. I love puppies, but I also love a dog with a brain. I don't like the adolescent stage of dogs, and boys appear to stay stuck there much longer than girls.

I will say, I do find that boy dogs seem to be more easy going and adaptable to different situations expecially pertaining to other dogs. I find girls to be pretty bitchy and high on themselves sometimes, where as Ripley (and the other two boys I had) is much more go with the flow, happy-go-lucky. Everyone he meets is potentially a new friend, where as the girls always have to see if somebody is worthy of being a new friend and most of the time they couldn't care less about other dogs. And if anyone is going to posture and act stupid with another dog, it'll likely be one of the girls before it's Ripley.

I've never had a marker. Now that Ripley's neutered, he probably marks less things than Dance does. Of course, if another dog comes to our house, he'll mark the yard more... but so will Dance. Otherwise, marking isn't an issue at all.

To look at, I also think girls are prettier. In coated breeds, they usually have less coat. They're smaller, more petite, easier to take places (Ripley is a pretty inconvenient size sometimes), etc. I dunno, all dogs are different and will vary, but I just have a huge preference for girls for the most part. I don't know if I'll ever want another boy or not. I adore Ripley and love the different experiences he's given me, but like I said, girls and I just click.

As for the actual subject of the thread, I have no recent experience with my own male dogs, but I agree with the "marking" thing. I see my friends with male dogs and those dogs are constantly hiking their legs. Perhaps it's training related as well, but Xena simply doesn't mark (at least not in the house). I've seen her do a quick squat and pee on something while walking, but that's about it.

As for temperment, I recall that the male dog we had when I was a kid was a wild and crazy guy. Xena, while very excitable at times, seems to have an "off" switch. Again, probably training related, etc. My sample size is very small in this regard, though.

My saying is "Females love you while males are in love with you". My boys tend to be huge momma's boys and worship the ground I walk on. I feel like I have to work a bit harder for that worship out of my girls and I need to have my sh*t together with training more. If I don't act like I know exactly what I'm doing while training Zuma, she'll look at me as if to say "come get me when you know what the heck you want".

This^ I have always loved my girls, don't get me wrong, but the boys are just more in your face affectionate. The girls will follow me into the bathroom. The boys want to help. The girls are willing to learn. They boys beg to learn. The girls are affectionate, but more on their terms. The boys are affectionate in every kind of way imaginable. Of course, these are big generalizations. The individual aspect of the dogs probably has more to do with it than the gender because I've had a girl here and there who was like what I describe the boys as being. (Toker is one of them) The marking is only a very mild annoyance to me. And one girl, Toker is more of a marker than any boy I've ever had. LOL. She is unreal...very unfeminine that way. LOL. But if I were acquiring a new pup, I might go for a female, but I know I'd be drawn first to a male. First and foremost though, I'd be careful to thoroughly look at the individual. :)

We like boys here..although I don't know that I can pinpoint a particular reason. Goose, of course, is perfect

Wow awesome stuff yall!

I am learning more and more by the minute Penny should of been a boy EXCEPT the whole "Uh...yea... not interested in your training skills right now". She definitely has an attitude but she is still so young that maybe I can get her to be a bit more excited about training/learning.
She is soooo affectionate, up my @ss already, and just wants to dance around for a few mins, then lay down, then dance around, its an endless cycle there.

And she is pretty. Her littermate is adorable, don't get me wrong, but I love that Penny has more brown on her than Bear. I am hoping when she gets older the brown will come out more.

Ugh, this is what is terrifying me. I LOVE my goofy, happy, silly and completely in love with me boy that Traveler is. I Love that everything he does is done with major enthusiasm and a big grin at me like "I love you! And I love this! And I'm HAPPY".

I'm intimidated by females but looking forward to my female too. Even though Sara has got to listen to me panic a bit about having a girly.

I prefer males despite currently owning two females! LOL

I enjoy the goofy "macho" boys to be honest. They never cease to make me laugh and I find they are easier (for me anyhow) to train.

Females on the other hand tend to be harder to train and downright stubborn (again, my opinion) Although Ida, the Great Pyrenees I recently adopted has a bit of a boyish attitude lol. She does mark and act "macho"

Pepper is kind of dim. Also she would like to meld into one with me if she could please. Honestly, if she could spend her whole day sitting on my lap, she'd be perfectly happy. She doesn't need to go play or anything. She can just sit here. And stare at me. All day. It's cool.
Females - less clingy? Haaaaa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

It comes down to individual personality more than anything IMO. We've had four male shelties and none of them have ever marked, never had any "macho" displays, none of that.

I don't know that I will ever intentionally seek out a female as a possible agility partner again (yeah, I know "But Susan Garrett loves females!"). Granted, Meg is a special case of weird, but from all the dogs I've seen work, worked with, watched compete - boys are just *simpler*. Girls think, they test, they proof, they ask why...boys just do. I wouldn't trade Meg for all the gold in Fort Knox, but I don't want to go through that again either!

I adore both my boy and my girl. Meg is actually the bigger attention hog, and the one who will fall all over everyone for some loving. Gusto is very aloof with people he meets out and about because He Is Working Now Please Leave A Message.

I really don't know that personality wise I've seen any difference. I think it all comes down to the individual dog. Lucy hikes her leg and pees in a hover-tripod stance a zillion times on a 1 mile walk.

I prefer females for several reasons. 1) I can pet her belly and there's nothing...in the way. 2) I can dress her up in cute collars with bows and flowers and sparkles.

I assure you, Orson would not only LET you do this, he would be THRILLED for you to..........then he'd prance around like a dressage horse to show them off :rofl1:

Not. Even. Joking! I don't call him Diva for nothing..........that's some of the 'goofy' that isn't going away, even coming up on 6 years old!
