Girls. They have more personality. Most of the male dogs I've met have had no interior lives; they're always either sprawled across Mommy/Daddy's lap or out hunting ghosts. The common belief that they're more affectionate is, in my opinion, the result of the best con job in history. Sure, they fawn and lean and act lovelorn constantly, but it comes across as more Eddie Haskell than anything. They're just sucking up. With the girls, it's an expression of affection. You're not quite their equal, but they're fond of you :)

My current dogs (and cats and rabbit) are all females. I think for the most part I've preferred females but I would very gladly take in a male.

Well, in my life (including Flicka and Pepe), I've had nineteen dogs (some were personally mine, others were "family pets"), and, of those nineteen, six were female, and thirteen were male. I currently have one of each, and I love both of them equally. My girls were a bit more aloof (with the exception of Flicka), more independant, and with a much higher drive. My males have generally been more dependant on me, more all-over-you-in-your-face affectionate, and their drives have varied...from my super high working drive Irish Setter to my extremely lazy, could-care-less beagle.

I like having a mixture of both in my house. I've found that when I have a male-female pair, they tend to bond more closely and tightly. When I've had multiple dogs of a single gender, they seem to have more of a love-hate relationship.

Now, as for cats, I currently have a female. In the past, I've ever only had males - I have found that I definately prefer the males...no offense, Lil...

PS: I've had Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Poodles, Goldens, Chis, Shelties, Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, Irish Setters, Boxers, English Setters, and Black Water Spaniels (and fostered many, many more).

When I was looking for a dog I had my heart set on a female GSD. Don't know why - I even had a name picked out, I was going to call her Bella. But then Charlie came to me and that was the end of that! I couldn't NOT fall in love with him.

Female. Get them spayed, and no problems.

The males I've experienced, all have not been as great performance dogs.

Besides, just don't like the whole lifting leg thing. But, I'm just partial because I've always had female dogs, only a male here or there. Live with three male dogs, have trained others, but the vast majority that I live with and have trained are female.

I grew up with females, never males. Then I married a wonderful woman that only ever had males. Now I love both... but we have males

Females, as they don't try to stop at every tree. ;)

But male cats. :D

Only ever had females - and contrary to belief they have ALL been bouncy and nuts and FULL of personality!

I think they are tomboys.

I can't say I'd mind either way... Ideally I'd like my next dog to be male, not sure why. I'll probably end up with another lady lol!

Can't get another one for about 2 years though :(

Gender is secondary to a good temperament.
Absolutely agree, Grace. While I have only had a female that is def. a velcro dog and very loyal but when it come to attetion she could really care-less sometimes. I must say my parent's male is such a sucker for attetion and loyalty.

it's not so much about male or female as it is about the temperment, and overall fit into our lives--I have had both male and female--would still consider either one!

No preferance for me either atm. It would be unfair for me to pick a gender. I will have to wait until I get more dogs in my life to see if I like males or females or both overall better. I think it's to soon for me to make that judgement and statement about this. It's really good to hear what you perfer and why.
