grr! my mom, for some reason i cannot figure out, detests male dogs. what could it be that she dislikes about them? i've never had a boy dog, simply because there's something she dislikes about them. i suppose this is more a vent than anything else :p

Maybe she had a problem with them in the past or just doesn't like to see their privates.....personally I find them more bonding than females.

I have no idea why that would be (maybe she's only met unneutered male dogs?), but I do sympathize. My mom refused to let us adopt male cats because "they spray," which I always thought was patently ridiculous. As soon as I could, I adopted a male cat, and he's been wonderful. And doesn't spray.

It's just one of those things about living with your parents--you have to accept their quirks. :)

neutered males......awwww, but they are the most amazing little love buddies. no wanting to roam. they are still vibrant guard dogs, yet so very loving. :) your mom must be thinking of intact males...who sometimes do have 'issues'. but that is a myth still. I adore my male (neutered) ....he is my little protector...and my love. :)

Thats my mom too. My mom took a picture of me and Binn and shes like "cover up his privates" LOL!!

I agree.. about the bonding thing. I had a female GSD once, and she was in a world of her own. :p

I can't say for sure why your mom doesn't like males. BUT, I can tell you why my mom didn't (my Buddy has changed her mind). My cousin's toy poodle had puppies and she gave me a black boy (I named him Bambi) for my 3rd birthday. At that time, it was less common to nueter than it is now. Anyway, my mom couldn't take the fact that this tiny little dog was lifting his leg all over the house. So, she found him a new home.
Please keep in mind this was 35 years ago and most people (at least where I come from) didn't spay or nueter.

Maybe it is the leg lifting thing? They are messier than the females.
And the view of the uneutered dogs? Kind of icky yes...

but males are, in my eyes, (believe it or not) less independent and seem to be love bugs. When you fix males they mellow out. But have heard and seen that after spaying females can become more aggressive and male-like.

I got her to admit that it's the leg lifting thing that she hates :p Plus she says "they're gross" I will crack her yet.

Neither of my boys lift their legs. I think it's because I had them fixed before they started lifting. Not to mention they were much easier to potty train than any of the female dogs I've had.
Tell your mom that once those little things are gone, the other thing doesn't peak out very often and it makes the boys much easier on the eyes. :)

None of my intact boys lifted their legs in the house. I think it's like the generalization someone mentioned about male cats "spraying". (For the record, I've seen female cats that could spray too!) Of course, you neuter them and take away that worry! I think you can break her!

I've heard a lot of people that don't like males because of their equipment. With girls it's hidden - while the boys like to share their glory at the worst possible moment and i think they get embarrassed.
