OK, our new pup Allie is a 10 week old bloodhound mix. We have to start crate training asap! We also have as u know a chi, Lilly. They are both girls and love each other. We tried individual small crates but they barked and cried for each other all night, tried putting crates in separate rooms but same thing, my daughter ended up letting them out at 3am to be together. My question is....can I buy 1 Med or large crate and let them to their crate training together??? I'm desperate for something to work, please help!

Honestly, I would not put your dogs in a crate together, ever when you are not supervising especially as your pup gets older she will need her own large crate as bloodhounds are pretty big and chihuahuas are small.. I would get two seperate crates and put them in different crates when you are not supervising! :) They may love each other, but they do not need to be crated together when you are not home as a fight can happen.

I wouldn't suggest crate training together personally..

First of all, it's important for these dogs to gain some independence (that includes from each other) and also, squabbles even among dogs that get along very well, happen and in that small of a space, it can be a volatile situation. (imagine being stuck in a small elevator with another person.)

I've encountered many (especially small dogs for some reason) who because they were raised too closely together, had trouble bonding and working with people or/and had HUGE issue being separated from each other EVER and suffered extreme separation anxiety when separated (even for walks or vet visits)

As for what to do now. I would keep the small crates. Start them in separate rooms..and get some ear plugs.

IGNORE. THE. CRYING. any attention (including yelling etc..) is attention and reinforces the behavior.
Once they realize the crying doesn't get results, they will stop.

Take the puppy out once during the night (some pups do need a break outside at 10 weeks during the night) .. no praise, no play, no talking... just take the pup out on lead, wait for the puppy to go and in 10 minutes if he/she doesn't, back in the crate for the night. Give a treat if she does go but that's it.. back in the crate for the night.

It takes time, it takes patience, but is more than worth it lol
I suggest wax earplugs lol
