Okay... so tomorrow I'm taking Revy and Kaylee lurecoursing. What do I need to bring? What kind of collar/leash do I need? Educate me!

I'm just a teensy bit excited... but I don't know what will happen since this is their absolute first time.

We took a regular leash, we did though take toys to redirect the dogs after they catch up to the lure.

We've only done it twice though so I'm not expert.

Also, what venue?

We've done coursing fun days with the local UKC coursing group and I just had the dogs wear regular, sturdy martingales to prevent slipping out of the collars in excitement and I had them on short leads so they were easier to control (Kes especially was almost flipping himself in excitement LOL). I'm not sure what the rules are about collars/leads at actual trials tho.

Other than that we just brought regular dog trailing gear (bowl, water, poop bags). You might want to avoid soft crates - it can be a really exciting event for some dogs and the soft crates can be so vulnerable to escaping in that sort of situation.

This will be an AKC event, but we're going to just be doing practice runs after the trial is finished.

All dogs will be in crates in the car, not supposed to get above 60 degrees tomorrow. :)

IPO in the morning, coursing in the afternoon, this is going to be CRAZY. :)

You need to bring your camera. Video and still.

That's all I have to offer...

Have fun! Video is a must! :D

I'm taking Riley to a fun run next weekend and I've entered him in an AKC CAT in June. Haven't heard if I've gotten in - fingers crossed!

I used my Ella's slip leads because I trust them when the dogs go nuts. When it was their turn, I slipped them off and held them around the front of their necks until "Tally-ho." We parked probably 30 feet from the field and it was cool and cloudy out, so I just left whoever wasn't running in the car.

Does anyone know wth kind of leads they keep on sighthounds who are actually coursing rabbit? I've been completely unsuccessful at finding what those are.

I knew what they were called when I was coursing, and then I forgot lol. I almost bought one when I was there, but I didn't.

I will bring my "agility" martingales - I have one from Chucklepup, and one from Genuine Dog Gear. I have some slip leads with metal clasps, but I'd be afraid of the dogs accidentally getting bonked in the head with a huge chunk of brass. ;)

I've got the video camera and the still camera batteries charging, but I don't know if anyone will be able to take photos of Kaylee and Revy. I'm hoping I find someone there that can help!

If you google "coursing slip leads," you'll find some.

Regular buckle or martingale collars are fine. Mendota-type slip leads are great for catching your dog.

For lure coursing, I use an old fashioned slid lead (see below). For hand slipping in racing, since they have to wear a collar, I use a martingale collar.

We use either "old fashioned" or mechanical slip leads -

This is a mechanical slip:

And this is an old fashioned:

I have pictures of both in use, if you want to see how they work.

(sorry the pictures are huge.. I just nabbed em off Google)

UPDATE!

The practice runs today were not CAT courses - they were full-fledged trial courses run by the hounds.

Kaylee did GREAT - I was astounded. I thought she'd do well, but had no idea she'd do that well! People were very impressed by both her follow and her speed... she's no saluki, but Dobermans really can haul a$$ when properly motivated! Stuck to the lure like her life depended on it, and was screaming to course by the time her second run came along! Looks like she'll have no trouble getting her CA title, and we will continue coursing and see how far we can get. 25 qualifying runs earns a CAX, so we'll aim for that. ;)

Photos will be coming - a friend was shooting photos today, and tomorrow I'll have my camera and video camera.

HEEHEE I LOVE LURE COURSING!

That's awesome! Coursing is SOOOO much fun,for the handler and the dog lol.

I'm aiming for CAX, too, but as long as my dogs will run we'll keep doing it. They both absolutely love it. I like that it's unlimited - CAX2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 etc as much as you want.

That looks like a blast! How do they determine a qualifying run?
I think in the CAT, the dog just has to show willingness to course, and stick with the lure without getting sidetracked... others can correct me if I'm wrong!

(Kaylee's run in the video would definitely be a Pass. If this had been a real CAT, she'd have had four qualifying runs.)
