I didn't know that pugs come brindled?
I didn't know Pugs came in brindle either.

They don't.

Brindle doesn't occur in the breed and something like Boston or Frenchie has to be mixed in (even far back in the lines) for the pattern to appear. Some that have had something mixed in way way back and have it appear look more like Pugs, but this dog is likely mixed in closer as it has a loose tail and improper ears and more of a Boston face.

To the OP, if the dog was sold to you as a Pure Pug you were had. I'm sorry. He is a very cute Pug mix though. Pug/Boston (often called Buggs) mixes are very popular around here and luckily most have good temperments.

The people who I got them from have been breeding to bring the brindle into Pugs for years.

Here is his mother and father also. They look pretty Pug to me.

I know many look down to colors brought in that aren't AKC standard. To each their own I guess.

Here is another color they have been working on.

All a work in progress.

He is ADORABLE!!!!! Omgggg. Such a cutie.

Actually, he looks more French Bulldog-ish to me.

French Bulldog:

Pug:

But either way, I don't think it matters anymore, cuz your dog is obviously going to be a happy pet and he is so cute. :)
I definitely agree with this. I don't think he looks like a pug at all. He looks like a Frenchie mixed with a Boston... he's adorable, but I don't think he's a pug.

Huge BYBs i see.

The only colours that exist in pure Pugs (not just per the breed standard but through history since the breed was being refined, this is a VERY old breed) are Fawn (which includes shades from apricot to almost white) and black. Both carry the gene for black masks and the gene for brindle pattern DOES NOT EXIST IN PURE PUGS.

All it takes is 5 generations to bring in a new trait and make them look like they're "pure". Doesn't make it pure. Those parents clearly look mixed to me. The dam especially looks Frenchie/Pug.

This breeder obviously doesn't show, doesn't do any titling likely, and i'm willing to bet doesn't do any health testing. If they're AKC registered, well the AKC relies on breeders being honest and i BYBs like this just are not honest.

Looking pretty pug does not equal purebred Pug. That's not how it works.

I wonder how far back the breeding out of other colors goes?

There are some who don't consider a black Fila a Fila, or one with more than a small amount of white, but go back to where they originate (like one long time breed expert I've spent time with did) and there they are. She even tried to bring one of the white with brindle patch dogs back from the old fazendas, but couldn't talk any of the old timers to part with one. So the "standard" we have now calls for too much white to be a DQ, and black to be "not a Fila."

I'm sure it's happened in many breeds, especially as breed clubs have become more interested in a dog's look being the paramount breed consideration rather than "is it a ______ on the INSIDE," first and foremost.

But this is a debate for another thread :)

Color aside even, the parents don't look pure pugs. However, he is very adorable - pure pug or not! Love the name too.

I didn't come to argue about this.

Sorry I have different opinions on the matter, and would like to see this brought into the Pug breed.

I will just keep my pictures to friends, and family. I can handle differing opinions, yes, but I don't want everything to be an argument all the time, which I see this is going to happen to be just because I call him a Pug, and think his parents look / are Pug.

I'll just keep being a terrible person and be going to my terrible back yard breeders who don't care about their animals and are just looking to make money, as that's how "BYBs" seem to be labeled by people.

I think he's adorable and I'm not even a fan of most pug looking dogs. I wish you would stick around though, pictures, opinions and all.

It's fun to learn (on both sides) and on this forum we do have some knock down drag out debates. I find what Renee was saying and the whole topic interesting and you bringing (a different) opinion to the table would be nice.

So pretty much what I'm saying is if you don't want to stay I get it but I think it would be a shame to leave just because of a couple people saying somethings that don't fall in line with what you believe.

I hope you stay around too. I don't think everyone needs to agree about everything. I actually like the look of your dog better than a lot of pugs - not because of the brindle, but he looks like he has more of a muzzle than most pugs I see. Oh, and he's insanely cute.

I know debates occur, and everyone has different opinions, but I just find it upsetting every forum I've gone onto puts my postings down due to the fact he is not a champion bred, purebred looking, correct standard colored, dog. It comes to not be a very fun time even sharing opinions after if happening so much.

Thank you though Linds.

Thank you too bjolly, as I just saw your post.

Well, I do think the "interrogation" would die down soon if you stuck around especially with that cute pup looking at you through the screen.

bjolly, I agree. I was thinking the same thing.
