I took Lucy to the vet (my 7 year old terrier mix) last week to get her senior blood panel done, specifically because the vet thinks she may have thyroid problems. They drew her blood and spun it down (?) and as I was leaving the vet ran out to my car and said that there was too much fat in the blood and it would be hard to get accurate results so I was supposed to fast her for 12 hours and bring her back to get blood drawn again. If there is still too much fat in her blood then we will go from there. My appointment is in an hour and I am hoping there isn't too much fat in it this time. Unfortunately I won't hear back until tomorrow the results of her blood panel.
The vet thought she may have a thyroid issue because she is overweight (how did I miss that!) and has lost her appetite and her energy level has dropped noticeably in the last month or two. Half of me hopes she does have a thyroid problem so she will go back to normal. She weighs 28 pounds and the vet wants to see her at 20 pounds but I find that very unlikely to happen as she has never been below 24 pounds since I got her. I may have to put her back on raw exclusively because that is the only way I've ever gotten her to loose any weight in the past. I can't feel her ribs at all but her waist is thin-ish so I guess that is why I didn't notice she was overweight.

Well I got the results mailed to us so we could have a hard copy of her values. Her T4 value is a 2.3 so it is in the normal range but they did not do the other thyroid tests so she can still have a thyroid problem. In the meantime I am to put her on a diet and see how that goes. The more thorough thyroid test is $200-300 and since she really needs to get some teeth pulled ($300-500) we are opting to the wait and see approach.

Why that is a really high price on a full panel thyroid. I have never paid over 85 dollars for any of Femkas and hers are full panel and sent out to Michigan state. My girl is tested every 6 months or before if she shows problems..
As far as tooth pulling, why can't they pull the blood for the thyroid panel when she is in anethesia? I would get another opinion here- something is not 'washing out' right..

I hope it all goes well. I don't have any experience with that you're going through, good luck.

That's a ton of money for the thyroid test. How much did you pay for the snap test?

Also 300 bucks to get some teeth pulled?! Christ! That's nigh on robbery.

I suppose it would depend of the condition of the dog's teeth. Kassie just has some pulled 2 weeks ago and it cost me over $700.

As for the thyroid test, I was trying to locate Boomer's test results he had a few years ago but was unable to find them. My vet had to send his out to a place in New Jersey. It cost us about the same amount. It's a much more accurate result.

I've never had to pay for a thyroid test before so I don't know how much they are....

but I know when bubby got his teeth pulled it was expensive... but they had to put him under to do it... maybe that's what made it a lot?

Well you always have to (or should) put an animal under for pulling teeth. When our clinic does it we charge $70 for a dental and if there are any teeth that need pulled after that it's $10 per tooth. Only exception is impacted teeth or teeth that otherwise give us a hard time/require extra work. If we have to crack the jaw or anything to get the tooth out we mostly refer you to a specialist.

I wish I had a place like yours to go to a few weeks ago...lol

But in reality I do like my vet and most importantly trust him.....so I'm ok with what I payed.
