A friend of ours has a Pom that has a lot of Kidney problems. She needs a low protein diet. The vet (of course) said that the only good foods to feed are Purina and Hill's. I'd like to try and find something else for her as we all know that those are not the best, and she reacts badly to corn and wheat and such (all of which are in those). If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! They'd be very much appreciated. :)

Oh, she prefers to feed canned food as opposed to kibble.

Our beloved Goldie (Papillon mix) now departed, was diagnosed with kidney disease and would not eat as well. After trying everything we could think of, my wife threw together a simple recipe that Goldie liked and seemed to keep weight on her. It was a simple turkey loaf. 1 lb of ground frozen turkey, 1, 4oz can unsalted tomato sauce and 1 1/2 cups of old fashioned Oatmeal, and two egg whites. Combine as in making a meatloaf and in the oven @ 350 for 45 or so minutes. After Goldies diagnosis she seemed to go down hill pretty fast but at least she was eating. She was with us for 17 years. Hope this helps...

Low phosphorus is what is most important, and having protein from animal sources, not plant or grain. Also, with kidney problems, canned food is typically far easier for them to process and it ensures they take in adequate moisture. The Canidae Platinum canned could be considered, or, home preparing a diet. If your friend decides to go with a home prepared, make sure it is adequately supplemented with minerals.

When a dog, any being for that matter, has any amount of kidney failure, the build up of toxins in the body does create nausea so it's terribly common for them to not want to eat.

You also may want to consider adding a couple of supplements, both from Pet's Friend, that can help with kidneys - FloraZyme LP and Rena G.O. Salmon oil with vitamin E would also be wise to add.
