Need advice on a fairly calm (not hyper) breed or mixed breed that will not require a lot outdoor exercise. Had a labradoodle and it was much too hyper even as it got older. Prefer medium sized dogs. Any suggestions?

I have a boxer that would sleep the day away if I let him. But that's VERY atypical for a boxer.

Any dog will need exercise. It does vary by breed and by individual dog. I would never think of holing myself up in a tiny studio apartment for a week with potty breaks twice a day because it's cold and snowy with my collie, but Gavroche (my boxer) was perfectly fine with it, and indeed enjoyed it.

How much exercise are you willing to give? A daily walk, only a few times a week, only on the occasion you feel like it? It's just be good to have some sort of idea of what you mean by not much outdoor exercise because it's a subjective term.

Anything else we should know about your household? Do you have kids, other pets, do you want a dog that likes strangers? How about grooming requirments (smooth coat, pro grooming, daily brushing, no shedding, etc.)

How about Border Collie?
I heard they requires exercise beyond just a walk around the block or a romp in the yard.

Many breeds that appear calm are so because they get the proper amount of exercise. It's important to know how much exercise you are willing to give. For instance, greyhounds are usually calm about the house.

As for the Border Collie thing, was that supposed to be a joke?

There is no one dog breed where all of the dogs need very little exercise.

Everyone's idea of "only a little" exercise varies, so if you told us more about your lifestyle it would help. Do you plan on taking the dog to obedience classes? Do you have a fenced yard? How often will the dog be walked, and how often will they get more vigorous exercise (fetch, swimming, jogging, etc.)?

I would recommend you do not get a puppy (under 2 years). I'd go to the local shelter and tell them what you're looking for, or if you set your mind on a breed, you can look into breed rescue or purchasing an adult dog.
