So about a week and half ago I get a call from my bf while Im at work. He told me Duke was acting werid. That he was sick and when he went to go up the stairs he looked drunk and almost feel down them. When I got home, he seemed fine. Alert, active his usual hyper self. Yesterday I was at the dog park with him. He was standing beside me and I walked away. When I walked away I looked at him and his left hind leg had gone limp and he almost fell over. This only lasted for less than a minute and then he was fine again. I went home after and asked my bf about more from the other night and after talking to him I found out it was his left leg that gave out that night as well. So I took him into the vet today and they did some nerve testing and some motions with his hips. Everything was going fine until the vet went to extend his left hind and we heard a loud crack sound like when you crack your knuckles and things. Tomorrow morning he goes in for xrays. Im alittle worried. He's only 2 1/2 years and so active, we have been doing agility and hes doing really well, and Im afraid all that might have to end. The first thing right know the vet is thinking is early hip-dylsplisia or something about some nerve I cant remeber. Anyone ever have this happen to there dog? or know of a dog with similar symptoms?

Good vibes for Duke would also be great.

Well went to the vet today. And got the results of the xrays. Its not good. Im not sure what it all means but she said his left hip is 20% of proper motion or something, Ill I heard was 20% and my mind just went into a thats not good thought. His right hip is at 40%. Now its just basically time until he ends up with hip dysplisa (sp?) So that means no more agility for him.

They suggested to put him on cartrophen treatments. Has anyone had experience with this treatment? The vet said it does make a difference. Duke is only 2 1/2 and all my plans with him have come to a halt. Im fairly upset by this I just dont know what to do. I dont want to do anything to make it worse.

I already slightly blame myself, so thanks for the verification of that. But its not because he jumped a few times for a frisbee. When he was 4months I only had him for a few days and it was his 2nd day in a crate. When I got home from work, I came in the door the Duke out of the crate minus his back leg which was logged in the crate door. He had unlocked the top latched pushed his body through but couldnt get his leg with it. He's had little things here and there after that. So theres that. Or also he has shepard in him so there could be that. It could have been caused by any number of things.

Don't dwell on the past ...that you can't take back ! Find things that you can do together now . I only mentioned the jumping because I cautioned all my owners of my pups not to stress their hip areas until they were matured dogs.

I'm so sorry to hear about this prognosis, DM! My thoughts will be with you and Duke. Most cases of HD are genetic, I hope you don't blame yourself! You did all you could do to prevent this from happening, sometimes bad things happen anyway.

I've never heard of cartrophen treatment, hoping someone else here could help you figure that one out. I'm sure you've done google searches about it, too. I would definately suggest putting him on glucosomine/condroitin suppliments, this is very good for joint problems (I take it myself!). I'm sure you could search here or on Google to find out what dose to give him, but you can find it easily at Wal-Mart, so it's a fairly easy treatment.
