corgi would be good, there are a lot of breeds that could fit that bill. most dogs will bark at intruders, even people just walking past :) corgi, pug, pomeranian, dachshund...just a few.
Pugs can't go for daily joggs...and they don't bark at people, in fact, it takes a lot to get a pug to bark at all. Mine sleep through the door bell half the time LOL! :D

corgis, especially female ones generally don't get along with other animals the greatest. the females are dominant and kind of pushy and I don't think they are on teh easy to train list. I think an older beagle is what you would need. As long as you get one that is quiet, and if you get an older one you should be able to tell, they are great for apartments and jogs and love to please. Its when they are puppies they are stubborn brats!

Well, you likely couldn't find a Manchester, but you MIGHT be able to find a Whippet. They are quiet, and couch potatoes until someone brings out a frisbee!!!!!!!

You should consider adopting a retired racing greyhound. We have two and we got our first one while we were in an apartment. They are affectionately called the 45mile an hour couch potato and they are NOT a hyperactive breed by any stretch of the immagination! Although they are not know to be guard dogs, my two are both protective and generally the stature will deter people (or their big teeth when they are smiling :D ) I think they are wonderful dogs and you can teach them to be fantastic jogging companions! They come in a broad range of sizes, and colours. I have seen them as small as 40 pounds and as big as 100 pounds! They are a loyal, loving, and devoted breed that cherishes their family! They adapt so quickly asking only for your love and giving so much in return. We live in Ontario Canada and adopted though GRA Canada ( www.gracanada.com ) but there are thousands of dogs needing home and I am sure a quick internet search will turn up a rescue in your area if you are interested. If you have any questions that I can help you to answer about this breed please feel free to pm me :)

I'd go with the dachshund or corgi. Not sure maybe... JRT?

My brother has a dachshund and he got an older one already house trained and everything. They form REAL strong bonds and are extremely sweet-- good for small houses and apartments, too! :)

dauschounds are great protecters... like dobermans... and good house dogs... but love the lap... i have two at my moms house... a mini and a regular... they are so protective.. we adopted the oldest one from a family who really didnt spend time with him and now he is so protective of everyone that spends time with him... he tried to attack my dobermans when they came to see their nanny for the first time... because he thought they were imposing on him and trying to push him out...

not to say all dauschounds are out of control to that point but... they are perfect protectors... more so than corgis and very good house dogs... train easy and love independence and interaction... it is great... they are awesome... and good and full of energy :D hope that helps hehehe

I'd go for a Greyhound rescue!!!
i would love to adopt dreyhounds one day except i need to set up an area for them first, and adopted greyhound, might be therre because it doesnt run fast enough in races, therefore it has been trained adn its high prey drive has been brought out. Considering I own a cat and 2 rabbits, Im not sure I could take on a greyhound for a few more years :D

I would suggest a Westie. My Nora has such a personality, she'll have you laughing and enjoying her all day. ALOT of dog wrapped up in that little body. She's such a spitfire! She barks at everything (maybe too much for your taste) though. But, even her bark is cute. lol
