Hi There, I am wondering how well this litter box training for dogs works. I am in the process of trying to find a Chihuahua Puppy and ran across an add that stated these pups were litter trained and I thought how cool is that? Do any of you use a litter box or know someone who does?

My Grandpa litterbox trained is Chihuahua, simply because hawks and eagles are too much of a danger where he lives. Kasey (his Chi) was almost picked up by an eagle once and from that day on, they decided to litterbox train. It's worked very well for them. However, I don't believe it's necessary unless birds of prey are abundant in your area or there is some other kind of known danger. I have little dogs, and they go outside just as the big dogs do.

So, by never housebroken do you mean a Chi will/can use a litter box but will still do his business elsewhere as well?

I really shouldn't have even posted as I've never had a dog under 75#s. To me you potty train to where you want your dog to go . When taught to go outside , they will always go outside . Maybe a dog can be trained to do both . I just picture taking a litter box whenever you visit or travel . Sorry , my bad !

No problem:) ....everyone has their own opinions and that is why I posted here to find out what people thought about it :D

I would like for my doggie (whatever kind I get) to go outside to potty but I've read so much about Chi's not liking to go outside in the cold or rain etc. and I just thought it might be better to start with a litter box and then maybe progress outside.

Thanks for the replies,

I have three chihuahuas and all three of them are peepad trained. They are perfectly housebroken.

It is possible to start with a litter box and then start outside training.

TammyAnn, just a note . . . Be very, very careful when picking a chihuahua breeder, there are TONS of bad breeders out there. Don't go to a pet store or go to someone who advertises in the classifieds . . . Be sure the breeder does health tests and has quality dogs. If you aren't sure how to tell if a breeder is good or not, make a post in the Breed forum and we'll be happy to help you out. :)
