Ok I have been trying to figure out the answer to this question ALL day! We finally got the lid to our new tank (they were all sold and they had to order one for us). So I set it up turned the heater and the light on. Should I put the light on, or leave it off? I thought I remembered that you were suppose to leave it on but I'm not too sure.

You need a healthy medium. Fish need rest too ;).
12 hours on, 12 hours off. Best way to go about it :D.

I was talking about when I'm letting the tank get to the correct temperature (before adding fish). We turned the light on while the tank was adjusting just because we didn't know. It seems alright though, and the fish are still alive (after 9 hours of being in the new tank).

I was told that when introducing fish you're supposed to place them in the water while they are in a plastic bag and allow the water in the bag to adjust. Then open the bag and just let the slip into the new water. What's done is done though, and it sounds like they're doing fine. Just keep an eye on the pH and chemicals, or else they'll get reeeaaalllly sick.

the ph level is fine for my fish. What I do is put them in a bag with their old tank's water and set it in the new tank then after about 20 minutes added some of the new tank water and emptied out some old. That way they slowly adjust to the ph level of the new water. They are all thriving though and seeming to enjoy their new tank.

Did you read the link I gave you Julie? You should search around that site. It is like Chazfish :D.
Sorry to have misunderstood.

I did read it, but before we had the question of the lights on or off. By then it was just like "well lets just leave them on while the tanks heating up." All I really care about though is that my fish live. They are freaked out of the really bright lights so we haven't had it on anymore because they always hide the second the tank lights come on (bright lights aren't good for piranha's anyway). We're looking into getting one of those 50/50 lights (sort of like black lights for the tank). I'll have to look at that sight agian that you mentioned.

I leave the lights on when Im home, but I always monitor water temps. The lights wont make an enormous difference in temp, unless theyre kept on for hours. Ive found that my fish do fine either way-light on or off.

yeah we leave the lights on when we are home as well. We only turn them off at night when we are going to sleep. My fish freak out though if we leave the lights on so sometimes we leave it off just to calm them down.
