Springers are lovely dogs. I have Taz and although he's not exactly what I had in mind when I got a springer he is the friendliest dog I have met (and I was raised with labs!).
This.

Most Springers are ridiculously friendly. And most of them are hyperactive, to be honest. If they aren't hyperactive, they will be medium to high energy (depending upon age).

The cockers here are horribly overbred, all have awful health problems and most of them are nippy and kind of nasty, probably because they're always feeling sick. I have only ever met one healthy, good looking, nice cocker spaniel who was actually from a pet store, and he's only about three so we'll see how that goes.

I'd like to meet a well bred cocker.

Cavs are nice, very sweet, sometimes a little bit shy, very goofy. I only know one who bites and his parents watch the dog whisperer, so that doesn't count.

I have a spanial of some kind mix :p

She is super friendly, would probably go home with anyone.

However, she is also a one person dog. She still likes everyone else in my family, but if they give her a command, she will look to me for conformation. Which really isn't helpful.

She tolerates other dogs, if she is unhappy, she barks. Not even to the dog, just barks up in the air and sits down.

She is getting older but she doens't have much energy.

DISCLAIMER: She is abnormal, weird, and likes to chase cats.

I have a 20 month old field bred English Springer Spaniel, and I have to say he is the most amazing companion I could imagine and I am grateful for his presence in my life every day.

He is very easy to train. Handler focused, extremely eager to please and very smart. He is excelling in agility, but he also was a star in obedience and takes to everything we do with great enthusiasm. He is high energy, but it is very manageable. A good run, hike or game of fetch in the evenings is enough to keep him nice and calm (although he could keep running and playing indefinitely). I leave him with a good variety of “puzzle toys†during the day so I haven’t had any issues with chewing or other destructive behaviour (besides normal puppy stuff when he was younger) and I am gone 9 -10 hours a day during the week.

He loves the people in his immediate family, especially me – his “personâ€â€“ watches and follows me from room to room, but with strangers he is very reserved. Doesn’t bark, low shedding (but I brush regularly), loves the water and is amazing off leash. He is also wonderful around other animals. Doesn’t bug cats, gentle with small dogs and has a solid “leave it†so I can comfortably bring him out to the barn around the livestock and be behaves. You rarely have to give an instruction twice, he is so smart I swear sometimes he is like having another little human around.

I cannot think of one bad thing to say about him, so if you are looking for a hilarious and adorable friend who will be up for everything you are (and you are already an active person) – I really recommend a Springer. But please be ready to share your life completely with your dog before getting one – they truly live to be with their people and should not ever be put in a situation where they are on the “outsideâ€. That is when this breed starts to cause trouble – when they are under exercised and lonely.

Ok I’ll stop…I could go on forever haha but to you specifically Laurelin – I think you would be the perfect Springer owner. You seem to be all about you dogs and that is the perfect environment for this breed. :) Good luck searching for a new addition to your family!

Laurelin, what breed of dog is that?

I think Spaniels are gorgeous. I don't know why I've never really looked into having on, though.

My dad always had at least one Brittany when I was growing up and still does (though they aren't actually Spaniels but pointers as someone mentioned). He trained them for bird hunting and they are cute little dogs

Thanks for all the info, BerryBye! Springers sound like really neat dogs.

Laurelin, what breed of dog is that?
It's a phalene, which is the drop eared variety of papillon. (Papillons and phalenes together make up the breed Continental Toy Spaniel) I really like the drop ears and would love to have one but they are not very common around here.

Well... I typed up a nice little thing on my fave Spaniels, but it timed out so, I'll keep it short:

I LOVE Spaniels. I hope to get a few Phalenes of course. ;) I also, hope to one day own and show an English Cocker. I really like the other Spaniel breeds too.. I would really like to get to know each of them. :)

Don't you love the looks you get when you tell people you have spaniels? I do it all the time just to watch the reaction.

A few people commented on how springers are super friendly, and a few said they're reserved with strangers, and I wanted to add that the 5 springers I know are all fairly reserved with strangers, ranging from warming up within a few minutes to not really warming up until they meet you multiple times.

A couple of them, however, loved ALL kids, even strange ones.

I finally got a chance to meet a couple of well-bred cockers, and they're very nice.

Haha I know! But then again we have the odd child of the spaniel family. ;) I can see why it throws people off guard.

It depends on the breeding. . . most of the backyard bred ones are definitely too friendly.

Well I haven't been back for a year, I don't think I ever posted here. I'm back online again, so howdy all. I have three dogs, small, medium and large.

Spanials ~ Well, I have a spaniel and pyreneese mix. He looks like ALL the spanels, and different pictures show ALL the different elements. No one picture shows em all. I don't know what kind of spaniel but has to be small since with pyreneese, he's only 55 lbs or so. Wavy ear hair. Fringy and freckled, his freckles have freckles. White with yellow tan spots. Georgeous, stunning boy.

Personality: He's a wonderful boy. Very bright friendly with humans, not so much other dogs. In fact trouble maker with them off and on. Mostly on but I can still take him out some. Needs something to do. Has that herding of the pyrneese. Very light slender and bouncy. Very bouncy and flexible. Tigger would have been a good name. Adores swimming.

Hmm I only know Cockers and Cavs but they're very sweet dogs.

Friendly with everything like you wouldn't believe but they do like to chase small animals like mice, squirrels and birds.

Our Cav isn't soft at all like a Pap in terms of training. She doesn't care if people yell at her whereas Nia will huddle into the corner of the wall with her head lowered to the ground if people yell at her.

They don't need very much exercise, a good walk a day will do although they can go for a long time as well. Truffles can run for 2-3 hours a day in the park.

In England, on average we see 3-4 Cavs on every single walk every single day. They're THAT common that everyone and their grandmother seems to have one.

I love Cavs after Truffles, they weren't a breed that I would've thought I would like but they're just the sweetest, friendliest dogs ever.

I had a springer spaniel growing up. I literally grew up with her since we got her when I was one. She absolutely LOVED kids. A bit reserved with strange adults but she was a sweetheart.

Michiyo,I've actually never really known a cav. I've seen them but never met one. I know papillons are closely related to them, are they much alike at all? Everything I read seems to say cavs are much much mellower though.

Import a spaniel from New Zealand ! lol
We have two gorgeous English Cockers and they're amazing!
Great with my three year old cousin-it's so sweet watching them together. They're incredibly affectionate especially to their owner but to the whole family too. One is quite reserved with some strangers-but shy-definately not aggressive. They're great little watch dogs but not too yappy. Love hunting and I can trust them completely around young kids-they obviously missed out on the over/in-breeding that destroyed their reputation in some areas. Springers are awesome too, although I think they're higher energy ?
I'll add some pics of our babies when I figure out how lol.

I would LOVE to have a Cav one day. I very nearly ended up with one a few years ago, from a stellar breeder, but got Virgo back instead. :p I just love how sweet they are, how friendly, how they can go from chill and snuggly to wanting to play in a heartbeat. I've dealt with Cavs that were anywhere from 14 weeks old to 14 years old and they just make grand old dogs too. Of course, most of the breed is riddled with health issues, but there are some very conscientious breeders who are working very hard to get those out of their lines.

We had a billion cockers come through the resort and some were ok, the rest were some type of crazy-ass neurotically insane. Or just very, very dumb but super sweet at the same time, which was funny to watch. Of course, I don't think a single one was from an even half-way decent breeder.

The Springers I've met...some are cool, most are just like "WTF? SETTLE DOWN!" Then again, hunting/gun-dog energy just grates on my nerves anyway, so I'm slightly biased. Same with Brittanys, but it's already been mentioned that they're not really spaniels. ;)
