Im having a hard time clipping the legs of most longhaired breeds....especially the Lhasa Apso. Most people ask me to do a puppy cut, which requires me to clip the hair down the same length all over the body. The body is not a problem, and I normally use my #4FC blade, but when it comes to the legs, it's tough because of the angle....and I have to make many rounds before I wind up just using the scissors.

What type of blade would you all recommend for this type of problem? Is scissoring the only good option for this?

other blades

Hi, if you are using your 4f blade for the body, there are at least 3 more blades you can use for the legs, and still have the puppy look. There is a 3 and a 3f, also there is another one I forget the number, I used to call it a 2, and the plastic combing blades which come down to about a 2 or so, work quite well. They leave just a tad more on the legs so the dog looks better, you still have to round the feet of course, and your blending from the shoulder is still really important but they sure save a lot of time if you're trying to finish a lot of dogs.

Thanks for the replies. I got 2 tips from other boards. One was to use a spray bottle and comb to help trim the leg hairs, I don't know how well that will work, but it's worth a shot. Another was to order a 5/8" HT Andis blade, which I just ordered and should be here Monday. Of course, I get the dogs tomorrow, so i'll have to resort to the spray bottle for now. But hopefully in the future the blade will work, we'll see.

Anyway, thanks so much for the help, i'll let you all know how it goes :)

Well, I finished them in no time :) I didnt even need to use a spray bottle, just my 4FC blade is all. I don't know why it was so much easier this time...but there is one thing that was different. The puppy was older and had been groomed twice since coming to me...so he was much calmer. Both were very calm. They came out looking very nice, I was pleased.
Anyway, here are the pictures http://grooming.gotpetsonline.com/gallery/2006-07-06-1
