howdy howdy folks....im sure this post will sound mildly pathetic.... :)

ever since we've had our Yorkie (about 6 months now)...ive been self-employed, thus...with Gizmo all day long.

well, i have a great job opportunity that i can take...or, i can continue to make it on my own...

im leaning towards taking the job, just because it's an awesome opportunity...but im worried about my dog...do y'all think he'll be ok (emotionally) while im gone to work?

thoughts?

I think I never realized how greatful I was to have GRandma to take my dogs to when I had to go somewhere or be gone for a length of time. I am sure your pup will get use to it in time, given a safe room where all fustration chewing won't get him in trouble...radio or ticking clock, tv noise.. toys and such. It isn't the same tho..once again I will put out the need in this world for a doggy babysitter..wish Gizmo had a grandma somewhere close by. In Kc doggy daycare is becoming a big business. I thought they looked a bit hard on the housebreaking training tho. I painted advertisements on the windows of one last year and got to watch the dogs in progress while I worked. They had a room where small dogs could socialize and play during the day. They kept it clean and it really didn't look that bad at all. I know they had weekly rates..

Thats certainly a tough one. Thats why I got two puppies, so they wouldn't be alone during the day. I'm also lucky that either my husband or I come home at our lunch to spend time with them.

I'm also fortunate to have "Grandma" to watch the dogs when we go out of town. Jackson Browne (Doxie) is so attatched to me that he will literally feel ill when I'm away and he isn't with family.

Good for you for asking and realizing that it can be hard on a dog. Particularly a young only child. :D

I think you can help him adjust now by getting him used to you being away for longer and longer periods. Some tips to make him more comfortable would be to give him toys that last a long time (stuffed kongs, box treats...) and too leave the tv or radio on.

How long will you be gone during the day?

You can also find a puppy day care. Maybe even for the mornings if you have time to pic him up and take him home at noon.

I think dogs all react differently to being left alone. I have two dogs, and they are compkletely different. One will whine the whole time, but the other one will just sleep while I'm gone.

I have two Yorkies and I think they sleep most of them time when I am at work. I say this because on the weekends I am at home most of the time other than going to do errands but by Monday Scooter seems to be exhausted because he didnt get his normal nap in during the day like when I am away at work.

It was a sad sight yesterday morning. When I left for work the worst thunder storm rolled up and it was storming like crazy. Cidney stresses when ir sprinkles and when I was leaving he tried to follow me out the door and had the saddest look on his face when I kissed him good bye. I hate days like that.

If I leave to do errands, I leave the TV on so they can watch or hear Animal Planet. If hubby and I leave for an over night trip, I pay a friend darn good money to come over and spend the night with them. I cant kennel them because Cidney has seizures, wouldnt think of doing it anyway.

I'm lucky that I get to spent almost all the time with Bonnie - but was concerned about having to leave her at various times - so like Saje said I "built her up" -- deliberatley leaving her (even when I could have taken her) starting with 20-30 mins and building up to hours.... not that I need to leave her for that long often, but so that she knows I will come back and to avoid a "cold turkey" BAM! of a long period of separation - without preparation. I also leave the radio on a talking program, softly -- seems to provide comfort.... just whats worked for me (well nothings chewed up when I get back!)

Mary had seperation anxiety badly. leaving her with her mum didn't help..she freaked if even shut in a different room.so we started with a minute of me stepping outside, worked that up to 15 minutes and praise..then so on..she is fine now..but since I know she doens't like it i usually drop her off at grandma's.

Start by leaving your dog in a room by itself for a few minutes. See how it reacts. Start doing it for longer periods of time until it gets used to it. If he start whining and crying, you should definitely think of a way you dont have to leave your dog.

I think he should be okay. Im also self employed and TOki bugs sometimes because he gets bored and wants to play. IF im busy I get annoyed because he whines and whines. Sometimes I wish I worked outside. hehehe

Does anyone leave their dog outside?

Hi I'm new to this forum. Does anyone leave their dog outside? I have 2 acres for the dog to run.I really need to start a job ioutside the house and I don't kow how to leave her. I was thinking of getting another dog so she can have a companion.

My husband and I both work full-time, and Zeus is alone inside the house. He does just fine. He spends all the time sleeping, anyway. As long as you give your dog lots of attention and love when you're home, they cope very well.

Some may disagree, but I personally don't see a problem with leaving some dogs outside during the day when nobody's home. Until he was reliable enough to be left alone indoors, Zeus stayed outside while we were at work. However, the dog needs shelter, food/water, and a safe, secure yard. During bad weather, it might be better for the dog to be crated or in a puppy-proof pen indoors. It also depends on the breed. Zeus is a hound and loves to be outside. But if you have a toy poodle who detests the outdoors (like some I've met!), it would probably be best to have a puppy-proof room or playpen.

It killed me on Monday to leave my two beagles at home. But, they have each other to play with and I hired a dog walker.

It is gut wrenching leaving them at home......

Especially considering I started reading abook recently that referred to dogs owned by people who work as "weekend dogs". It basically implyed that they will be hyper, untrained and sad.

I work to provide Bodhi with all the treats and toys she has now (maybe I am buying her love because i feel guilty ;) ).... I spend more time with her than my bf (is that telling me something? ;) ).

It is a difficult situation trying to decide what is best for us and what is best for our dogs sometimes...

I wish I didn't have to work. When I was a kid, I always said I would get a job I could take my dog too... I reckon I can still fulfill that dream somehow!
