I'm also glad that I have a Mac. :) Even if I still used my PC, I don't think I'd be too worried. I always kept it up-to-date and ran regular virus scans.

Can't say I've heard anything about the bug actually happening, though.

I don't think hoax is maybe the right term. It is a real virus/issue but they aren't really sure WHAT it's purpose is. It's been around...but is likely not a major threat. BUT they don't know why it is harvesting websites...and that is kind of an odd thing to do...

I updated my windows a few days back just in case. The news did say the virus can block access to the MS site, and a couple other virus scan sites...which to me is rather interesting.

Very true, I meant to add that in last night but I was tired :lol-sign:

The virus is very very real, and it can happen. However, Rob says that if you have a up-to-date virus program, and Windows is updated as well, you should be in the clear.

This particular virus is a worm called the conficker worm. It's still fairly new, but when it came out in October '08, they had it under control by November. So, if you have your computer and anti-virus updating, they should have this particular threat already in their virus definitions.

I have nothing to add about the virus... I use mac and my work computers are updated with security patches every 3 days due to the type of information they contain.

But... when I saw this thread title I got VERY SCARED! I thought PM was leaving the board for good! I'm glad that's not what it was about! LOL.

I doubt anything will actually happen today. The worm was to get a new set of instructions on April 1st, but that doesn't mean it will actually execute those instructions today. I'm guessing whatever instructions in recieves today will be executed in a few weeks after people have let their guard down.

If you don't have it today then you probably won't get it. The main virus itself is harmless. The only real damage can be done if it updates itself and most tech nuts are saying that the chances of that happening before your antivirus catching it are really really slim. The virus definitions for almost all programs is already out for this bug so really, you've got nothing to worry about.
