We have "adopted" a 3 month old pure bred lab. He will not poop outside. He will pee. But we have taken him for walks and nothing. As soon as i he steps foot inside, he squats. Rush him outside, and nothing, even if you hang out for a little while.

Any ideas?

All I can think of is to keep at it. Don't let him poop inside. Has he even once pooped outside? If he does, give him an extra special treat, something he LOVES and praise him a whole lot. Another thing you can try is when you take him outside and you think he should have to go, insert a small, cardboard (not the wooden ones) matchstick half way up his behind so half is still sticking out. Have the sulphur end to the outside. This can stimulate him to go. Walk him around a little first. Make sure he has enough fiber in his diet too. When he does start to go, quietly add in a cue word, like "go poo" or whatever so he'll learn what you mean when you tell him to go. Don't forget to praise him and give him a marvelous treat the second he finishes. Don't make a big fuss while he's going or he might stop. Wait till he just finishes.

I dont understand this dog at all.

So far he has went to the bathroom outside 2 times. The rest is all in our house and its getting on my nerves. I know hes a puppy, but i just cant for the life of me figure out why he wont go outside. He pee's right next to the door. I mean right next to it. And he will beg to go outside. He barks at me and scratches up my door, but then as soon as he goes out its all play time. He wont do anything but play.

I will try the match trick.

Keep him on a leash, don't let him play. Take him to your one designated area (not too small because they like fairly clean areas) and walk him around it a little to get his bowels moving. Don't act all playful....just be really quiet. See if that works. You have to prevent him from going inside the house. Everytime he does another poo in the house is just one more reinforcement for that behavior...making it more and more clear to him, that going in the house is the proper place to go. More supervision, don't take your eyes off of him while he's loose in the house. Stay out with him a little longer, if he's going the second you come back inside. If he goes outside, be sure and have treats in your pocket for after he finishes. Hang in there.

I've heard of some people who show their dogs using the match stick trick before going in the ring. They cannot go in the ring or they'll be disqualified. It stimulates them to go if there are any bowel contents in there. You might p.m. Doberkim. She might know about this.

Poop

I found this gr8 site that could help you in your quest to potty train your dog. It includes free video demonstrations.

I think a q-tip might be too firm and too long (don't want to injure anything) and some of them have a coating around the stick part. I think the match stick (the little cardboard ones) are more biodegradable if they should "suck" them up into their rectum. I might not be so sure about the sulphur tip though. Apparently, they usually get to pooping and it just comes out with that. But Doberkim would be the one to check with on that.

Great minds think alike! I was going to suggest that. Along with telling the poo in the house that its BAD then move it outside and praise the poo! LOL seems silly but some dogs respond to that!

I am with grammy. Take it outside as soon as he does it, and leave it there. Always take him to that spot when it is ti me for him to go.
