okay so ever since i was a kid, i have been obsessed with watching Agility and Fly Ball and Frisbee tournaments. Now that I am married and all 'grow'ed up' ( but do we really? :p ) i want to get involved. Ideally, i want to do agility with a Border Collie, like i had when i was a kid ( i miss him so much! )

but my husband made a deal with me:

Since I wanted to do Therapy work with our newest baby , Koda the teeny weeny pomeranian, that involved me joining the nearest Club anyways. So he said if i do not only the involvement in community work but do agility fun and training with Koda, then he would Okay us having a 'bigger dog'

Koda is only 4 months right now, weighing in at 2 lbs. he is registered of course. We are moving to shaw afb, south carolina at the end of the month so i can start him on official training and certification as soon as we get settled ( mayish ).

has anyone had any experience or know anyone that does agility or other sports with a small pomeranian?

Poms are stubborn but have lots of energy and love to run. Find a good trainer that works with positive motivation and reinforcement and you should have a blast with him! Also, socialize the living daylights out of him now while he's still a teeny weeny Pom and open to all sorts of new experiences.

Welcome to Chaz!

thanks for the warm welcome.

yes, my husband being in the air force, he keeps bringing home the 'single young ones' for dinner and video game time hahah so Koda sees lots of new faces and i have high hopes for him becuz he responds so warmly to everyone and totally remembers his friends the next time he sees them.

our older baby tho :( is a chia pom..and he doesnt like anyone hahah!

Poms can make wonderful agility dogs. :)

Don't be too quick to jump into the border collie breed though. Soo many many breeds can do perfectly fine in agility. :) Sure, BCs are fun to run in agility(but they are also harder and take a very skilled handler and trainer), but do be aware that they are quite a handful for every day living!

There is a pom in our agility club who is fantastic! While it is certainly hard to compare him to the border collies, he is very competitive and successful in his own right. Good luck!

There's a chi locally I've seen run agility. And I've seen toys running some of the bigger competitions on OLN. I run a cocker spaniel who jumps 16" so she's smaller than the popular hearding breeds too. Some things are better to teach when you need to lift your dog off something you can ;)

One of my trainers has a BC and two wirehair fox terriers.. The other a BC and an aussie. And while the breed does fantastically on a whole, the terriers are titled, and the rest aren't. They are still on the youngish side, but they've been exposed to agility since puphood from people who train very well. But, they are over exuberant and hard to handle. I think you'd be better off to take your current dog and seriously learn together, and then re-evaluate what future breed you want and why.Simply seeign them run nice on tv isn't really a good enough reason, but being more active in the sport, you'll either come up with better reasons to have a herder.. or maybe in time change your mind and want something totally different. But, no breed is really limited.. And there is no reason you can't try.

OOoooOOo exactly! yes, i dont want to base anything ive seen on tv all my life except the fact that i LOVE it ^_^ Koda and I will learn together and make new friends and have fun. In the future, after i have knowledge and experience under my belt, I may decide on another breed also. But who knows! Fun is my number one goal, to be active and healthy, so winning awards isnt all i care about : so maybe i'll like being that local girl ' who has the cutest little runt that beat the pants off my dog' ^_~

o, and i have had a BC before, as a kid, and i DEFINATELY know how much of a handfull they can be, especially without professional guidance . He had no idea what a YARD meant and that youre supposed to stay IN the yard hahah also, he had a mind of his own and when we played together, half the time he made up the rules of the game himself! ( i was a kid, i didnt know any better :p ) so there is just some nastalgia there about mentioned wanting a BC.

anyways , thanks for your advice and you definately nailed what im looking for and what im wanting to do!

just one question tho ( pardon my noobish ways ) :
I've seen toys running some of the bigger competitions on OLN

What does OLN mean? *blushes*

Thanks and see you some more i hope!,

Outdoor life network. It's the only thing I get on tv that shows doggie events :)

No worries, I think you and Koda are headed in a good direction. If you need any help, just shout.
