It's kind of eerie, but he does seem to be able to tell.
We have a woman at work who has cancer of some kind, not sure what kind it is, but she's going to be undergoing a second series of chemo treatment soon. When King sees her, he whines, very loudly, like Lassie did on the old "Lassie" TV show. He didn't do it when he would see anyone else. A few weeks ago, just before Thanksgiving, I went to a friend's house with King (Their dog was one of King's best buddies and he had recently passed away due to heart problems, and they hadn't seen him in a year or so, since he was diagnosed with Cushing's), and his mother in law was there visiting, and King went over to her and whined like he did with the woman at work. It kind of freaked me out and my friend's wife asked me why I had the odd look on my face, and I said, "Well, the only time I've ever seen him whine like that was when he saw a woman I work with who has cancer!". She looked at her mother, who was hugging King and her mother said, "I was just diagnosed with breast cancer a few days ago!". She had surgery right after Thanksgiving, and we will soon be visiting her to see what happens. Hopefully he won't be whining. Her doctor said he's seen a few dogs over the years that do seem to be able to detect it instantly, like King. They seem to almost never be wrong. He recently saw my mother, and didn't whine, but he did whine when several of the other old ladies said hi to him at the assisted living place she's at. I didn't have the nerve to ask them if they were sick or not. My mother is going to have a chest X-Ray soon to see if a spot on her lung has grown in the 6 months since it was spotted. King giving her the "all clear" makes me feel better, but we will see.

Thanks, but I think at 86 in about a week, she's kind of hoping it's not. She's in a lot of pain from fibromyalgia and arthritis, etc, and she kind of wants it to be all over with. She was a total basket case when King had his health crisis last year, and said she doesn't want to outlive these two dogs. But thanks again for the good wishes.

That's very interesting. I wonder if there is someplace....a teaching university or cancer institute of some sort where King could be tested. If he seems to be clearly recognizing cancer, you might be able to put him to work somehow. It might be very rewarding if he could indeed spot cancer when it's in it's early stages. Or help science in some way. What he has shown you, certainly would be enough to perk my ears up.

I am sorry about your Mom and the others you know with cancer. I hope they can beat it.
