Hello,

Last week I got a text from my mom that my dog was sick. He lives with my parents because they have the room for him to run & my apartment doesn't allow dogs. Plus, he'd never be happy in the city.

Anyway, after running bloodwork, they decided it was probably antifreeze posioning. They had him on fluids and an everclear drip Wednesday, Thursday and part of Friday. My parents brought him home on Friday and brought him back to the vet clinic today to re-run the bloodwork.

Bloodwork shows kidney damage, so they will have him on a special diet & meds. (I don't know what meds). When I was home last weekend, the special diet they had him on was Science Diet, KD. He would eat the canned, but hates the dry.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what sort of food would be easy on the kidney?

Usually a raw diet would be the very best diet for a dog with kidney damage. The moisture content in the protein is very high which is vital to kidney function and the raw meat is very easy to digest for dogs.

Adding a high quality pet fish oil supplement like Nordic naturals brand would also be a very good idea. Omega 3 has been shown to reduce inflammation in the kidneys.

From what I've read, in most cases it's not high protein that is the issue, it's the phosphorus levels you have to watch. Although a raw diet is not really high in protein due to the moisture content. If the phosphorus levels are high, then you do have to be careful with the bone amount in a raw diet, in some cases you may have to use a calcium or aluminum binder depending on the phosphorous numbers.
