Hello,

My sister has an 8.5 month poodle-golden retriever mix. He has been on Purina One Large Breed puppy since they got him, but they are switching him to an adult food since he was just neutered, and would like to switch to a higher quality food while they are at it. I referred her to the Dog Food Project website, but she found it a little overwhelming, and wanted a list of recommendations instead. I know this has been discussed before, but I was wondering if you could throw out some brands you like? Also, would foods with high protein contents cause problems at his age? So far I have:
Kirkland Chicken and Rice (I use it for my two because of cost constraints, but she may be able to spend more than me)
Innova
California Natural
Canidae
Blue Buffalo
Thanks in advance!

Taste of the Wild and Solid Gold are others I can think of that are decent/better quality I'm pretty sure Taste of the Wild is the cheapest grain free kibble out there and my dog has done great on it since she was 4 months old. ToTW is an all life stages formula so there shouldn't be any problems with the protein content at all.

I feed Acana Provincials (aka Grain Free) and I rotate between the 3 grain free types. I have been on the Pacifica bag for awhile now because he is doing amazing on it. Great coat, energy, clean teeth, no odour, healthy ears, skin, ect.
Their website provides a total nutritional and ingredient breakdown too, so I feel confident feeding it and it’s on the Dog Food Analysis website if you want to read their review as well.

Also, as a personal choice, I am weary of introducing a high protein feed to I try and stick to the mid to low 30 percentile as a general rule which the Acana feeds do, without sacrificing quality.
Here is the website – Champion Petfoods | ACANA | Our Products
Good luck!

Ours have been doing really well on Diamond Naturals for about six months or so now. No corn, no wheat no soy or by-products. It comes in 40lb bags, and is affordable if on a budget.

I feed Taste of the Wild high prairie formula. Gavroche LOVES it and he's doing very well on it, so I have no intentions of changing any time soon. In the past he's been on Purina ONE, Science Diet, and Authority Harvest Baked, and all of those gave him diarrhea to some extent. The only exception was Hills t/d which he still gets once in a while, but as soon as I'm none with the single servings I've packed into bags, I'm going to go to straight ToTW.

Two of my dogs eat Acana Provincials (Grain Free line) -- one the Pacifica, and the other rotates between Grasslands and Prairie Harvest. I absolutely love the food and both girls look and feel better than ever on it. I also find it very reasonably priced compared to most foods available to me.

Ripley eats Petcurean's Now! Adult formula, and he's doing pretty good on it. I don't like it as much as I like the Acana -- stools are minorly bigger and coat isn't as great (still nice though), plus he has to eat a ton of it. But Acana is too rich for him at the moment which is why he's still on Now!.

Finnegan is fed Taste Of The Wild Wetlands formula. I fed him Pacific Stream but didn't like the fish breath. :p He's doing great on Wetlands - shiny coat, active, healthy and small, firm poop. And he LOVES it, I can use it as training rewards.

Apparently TOTW differs rather widely in price depending on where you live. Here, it is relatively inexpensive for its quality.

Healthwise is good for the budget conscious. I currently feed EVO and rotate between that and Nature's Variety Instinct when money is good, or go to the Healthwise Active when money is tight.
