How do you guys feel about keeping your dog tied to you around the house for a couple of days as part of being grounded? Hudson has been giving me a run for my money the last week or so. It's either the change in weather, or that he's finally done fighting mange, or both!

He keeps nipping at me, starting games whenever he pleases, hiding from me when I am trying to get him for some reason, wandering off and eating socks, etc.

I *think* I heard about a technique where you keep him tied to you so he has to follow your every move? Do you think that is a right and a smart thing to do? I think it is supposed to help establish pack order.

i think its a great method when used properly, by making him follow you your establishing YOU are in charge, just make sure when going through doors ect you go first, and be very carefull on steps/stairs.

Great... Thanks for the replies so far. I'm curious as to how many people do this!

I had Hudson tied to me most of this evening, then went out for a brisk walk, and then I crated him while I showered. Afterwards we played a little indoor fetch. I can say I already saw a difference in his attention to my wishes. Cool...

This is all really interesting. Yeah, Hudson was my shadow for the first month or so with me, but lately he's getting more independent. It's confusing, because I want him independent enough to be able to stay home alone sometimes without crying his head off (still working on that), but not so independent that he feels he can ignore me sometimes!

I have done it. It works really well. When we first got him, I did it to make sure he didn't have any accidents in the house. Then when he got a hot spot, I did it to keep him from licking and chewing at his foot.

Its also used as a way of teaching them to heel. Very sucessful technique if used at a young enough age.
I think its a good idea

I have had to use this method numerous times. THe last with a jack russel that hiked his leg on everything until he reached my door. THat was the end of that. WE established my rules from the get go. IT is supreme for house breaking with an older dog, in fact imo the only way. A couple days of severe"i mean it" behavior modifaction has great rewards and beats months and months of trying to catch them in the act when they are smart enough to be sneaky. THe can't sneak off or chew when they are three feet from you.
