Keely's ear is swelled. Its been swelled for a few days now. Ive been cleaning it daily because last time I was at the vet with her she said that if her ear acts up to clean it with her ear cleaning solution daily.

It doesnt smell funky or anything and theres really nothing in it like gunk or anything else that would make me think its infected.

Last time I was at the vet she said to bring her in if her ear isnt better after a week of cleaning it daily.

Shes scratching it and it does seem a little painful to the touch. (but the problem is, Im not sure if shes responding the way she does when I touch her ear because of pain or because she thinks im going to a.) Clean it again or B.) Pluck the hair from her ears. She usually responds weird anyways when I touch her ear because she hates having them cleaned.)

I know that I havent plucked the hair from her ear in a while, and the vet told me to keep the hair out of it otherwise it could cause an infection. But should I pluck the hair now when its swelled and possibly causing her pain? I know it would help in the long run, but its going to hurt her.

(Btw, im trying to get her an appointment, and the e-vet will NOT see her just because her ear is bad:rolleyes:)

I would take her to the vet when you can. In the interim, possible give her an appropriate amount of Benedryl. (Has she had it before? B takes it like candy when his allergies are bad, so I don't mean to give veterinary advice, but it's no big deal for my dog.)

hmm.. do you have to pluck the hair? Is there any way you can shave it off so it doesn't hurt as much?

Thanks for the suggestions..

Getting a vet appintment is **** near impossible but moms trying to get her in without having to wait a month.

And no, You cannnot just shave inside the ear canal. The hair has to be plucked :p

If you can get a pair of forceps in the air, I would still pluck the hair. Otherwise it'll never improve, because the hair holds all the moisture in. We regularly pluck ears as part of treatment for ear infections at work.

Now, is her ear canal swollen, or is it the ear flap itself? If it's the ear flap itself then it's probably a hematoma, and that can be an emergency (not life threatening, but it will permanently damage the cartilage of the ear and make her look different if left untreated).
