Hello all,

My female 5 month old Saluki is in heat, my 5 month old rottweiler looks more confused than anything else, particularly as she humps him...

I dont want to separate them as i dont think the rottweiler will mate with her, he has shown no inclination to and he still squats to pea which to me means he is yet to reach puberty, as such there is no risk in an unwanted mating. Am I correct or should I separate them?

No, keep them seperated. There IS a chance that they will mate.
It happens all the time..that's why there's thousands of homeless dogs in shelters.

Why aren't they fixed?

Yes he WILL mate her, and then you will have a horrid kettle of fish. A pregnant puppy, inpregnated by a large breed dog, BIG puppies, a puppy mother, etc etc etc ad infinitum.

You MUST keep them separated if you do not intend to breed them. Mother Nature is POWERFUL, and the drive to reproduce WILL assert itself.

Separate these dogs, and spay/neuter please.

Even if it's an inconvenience, they really should be seperated.

Redyre and Dulce,

I will separate them immediately, but if its physically possible for the 5 month old male to impregnate her than maybe it has already happened as she has been in heat for 9 days... I certainly hope not though...

I havent spayed or neutered them because I will one day breed them if she becomes a good courser and he proves a good stud. If I do spay and neuter it will be when they are at least 2 years and that is only if they have health, temperament or conformation faults.

Thank you.

Well if he has gotten to her ( possible ) you will have a fine mess in 9 weeks.

:yikes:

If it were my puppy I would go immediately and have a progesterone test done. In this way you can tell if she has ovulated or not. The one I had done today on my bitch was $58.00 US. Small money for piece of mind.

Meanwhile, separate them absolutely.

;)

Napoleon, I hope I'm correct in assuming you are thinking about breeding your Saluki girl to a Saluki boy and your Rottie boy to a Rottie girl?? "Breeding them" as a general term and not meaning together, right?!

If it sounds silly, I'm sorry, but with the current "designer dog" fad going on, I have to ask.

I would go ahead and seperate them. My Aussie still squats to pee most of the time and he's 3 years old and was a late neuter at 1 1/2.

Wait a minute... so you intend to breed both dogs...

So you have a male and female, both intact, which you do not wish to seperate? I assume they're both house dogs? How on earth are you going to prevent them from mating in the future?

Saluma and Ajab now seperated.

I really want to thank all of you who have offered advice. I have seperated them, one stays inside the other outside alternating every 1-2 hours. I let them hang out together when im feeding them and to play under direct supervision and you guys are definately right; they are too interested in each other and the Rottie certainly has matured in a day... He is no longer as confused as before and is moving in the right (or wrong...) direction.

As for breeding them, no I will not breed them to each other, and in fact I may neuter or spay one of them cause keeping them seperated is really tough and its only been a day.

A big thank you to all!

PS I have tried to post pics of them but have been unsuccesful, if anyone can help it'd be great.

Sorry, but letting them be together for supervised play and dinner time is not separating them!! He could get to her quicker then you would know what to do and then once they are tied it's over!:yikes: SEPARATE them.

Eek, I just looked back. I missed it earlier! It's important they are always seperated! One second and they are tied!
