Just got his Bordetella vaccine...is it okay to give him his Heartworm pill?

My dog is about 3 years old and he was just given a Bordetella vaccine. He was tested for heartworm and lymes and thankfully they were both negative. He is due today for his heartworm pill (interceptor) but because he was given a vaccine, I'm afraid to give him his heartworm pill too =/ I usually space things out but knowing that he's heartworm negative, I don't want to wait and have him get heartworm.

I've heard things about giving Interceptor every 45 days instead of every 30...is that alright? Should I just wait for a few days before giving him his heartworm pill?

I personally am not comfortable waiting 45 days for a HW pill, so I wouldn't suggest that.

How is the dog doing? Have you noticed any reactions to the vaccine? I have a dog that is sensitive to vaccinations and HW pills, so I personally would probably wait a day or two for my guy because I know he has issues and I don't view the risk of a few days to be a big one. That said, it's probably a good idea to give your vet a quick call.

I would definitely not give the heartworm meds on top of a vaccine. Many vets suggest, or recommend, 45 days for heartworm meds and I would go this route, instead of giving so many harsh chemicals all at once.

Heartworm medication will kill up to early fourth larval stage in an infected dog which occurs 2 to 3 months after being bitten by an infected mosquito. So do not go longer than 45 days particularly if you live in an area with high levels of heartworm.
