I was noticing the thread on how German Shepherds are the #2 dog in the U.S. now. And it made me think about how I just don't like German Shepherds. I just don't trust them.

I am sure this is because my dog has been attacked by two different German Shepherds. Although logically I know that it doesn't mean that German Shepherds are a "bad" breed. Emotionally, I just am not convinced.

So I was wondering if anybody else felt that way about a breed. Not that they just aren't a breed you care for. But that you have an actual dislike towards the breed.

Nope...

I don't have a "dis-like" for ANY breed.. there may be certain dogs that I don't like, but its not because of breed, its because of the individual dog....

No, no breeds I actively dislike. Several don't have the 'wow' factor for me that others do of course. But I can't think of any I dislike.

I used to dislike Eskies, but then I met a good one. He was pretty wonderful and changed my mind. (I had all bad experiences with eskies prior)

I used to dislike shih tzus and then I met the most awesomest dog ever that so happened to be a shih tzu. Seriously she was wicked cool.

I also disliked schnauzers a while since they seem to have a vendetta against my dogs. Last weekend Erin, Jude, Summer, Mia and I ended up in a mini schnauzer meetup somehow and they were all delightful dogs.

So now I've decided disliking a breed is silly. There's some that aren't good fits for me, but I honestly appreciate and like all of them.

Yes I have a few certain breeds I am not fond of...(mostly toys, bet you can guess). But that doesn't mean I'm going to go and start a thread to show my distaste for them.

There are certainly breeds I wouldn't OWN.

But beyond that, nope, no breed I dislike or don't trust. They're all just dogs to me.

You just need to meet more. :D

Seriously if you meet enough of a given breed I'm sure you'll see there are great dogs in every breed. I'd definitely recommend trying to meet some good German Shepherds and see if that helps. :)

I'm actually the opposite! German Shepherds, for some reason, are a breed that I get along with and understand the best... it's bizarre, because I haven't had a GSD or been around one since I was 4 years old. There are these two who come into the hotel and I'm the ONLY person who can walk or handle them. I can think of more breeds that I'm strangely drawn to than breeds that I distrust.

I hate to say it, but I have developed a complete distrust of Boxers. :/ I used to want a Boxer! Now, every single Boxer I work with is devoid of manners (like... they will all jump up and claw your face in a second) and is an unpredictable bully in day camp. I always dread getting a Boxer in my group, any Boxer. I think it could be that the breed is just getting more popular and more people who aren't prepared for them are buying them and bringing them to my place of work because they're soooo out of control. I don't fear Boxers as being aggressive, though.

I have also developed a fear of Maltese after my lip was nearly pierced by one. Ahhhh! I've never been scared of a dog like I was of that little jerk. She was definitely just afraid, besides being horribly bred and horribly socialized, but I don't even want to touch a Maltese now.

Shih Tzus...

They just rub me the wrong way, dunno why but i've never met one that wasn't bitchy and skittish. Maybe my opinion will change in the future if i meet a good one, but until then i just plain old don't like them. Izzie's only been harassed by two dogs in the store (where she is off lead because well it's our store...) and both were Shih Tzus. Danes, Shepherds, Rotties, Collies, Poodles, Poms, Bulldogs, APBTs, etc. all fine... But the Shih Tzus keep going for her.

I wonder if one breed of dog can just dislike our dogs. In my case GSDs, in your case shih tzus. I know it makes no sense . . .

Yeah, there are a few breeds that I just don't particularly like... would never own one, don't like working with them; in fact there are a few breeds that I can't figure out who would actually like them. :)

But I know that there are a lot of people out there that feel the same way about chihuahuas - and they tend to let me know about it whenever I have my Luna around - and my other favorite breeds as well. So I figure, to each his own! That's why we have hundreds of different breeds anyway!

I won't say that I outright don't like them... but I don't have much tolerance for Boxers these days. I do know a couple of nice ones, but the rest of the ones I know and/or meet are just insane. They're extremely Dog Aggressive, pushy, rude, jumpy, and just overall poorly mannered dogs. That said, most Boxers around here are Backyard bred dogs with completely clueless owners. So really, it's not their fault. The two that I know that are nice dogs are nicely bred with a good owner. They're still too pushy and bouncy and slobbery for me, but I can't say I don't like those dogs... I just wouldn't want to live with them.

I find most retrievers (Goldens, Labs, Flat-Coats) to be very annoying, but I do like them. I just wouldn't live with them. They're so in your face happy, exuberant, "I just met you and want to be your best friend" dogs. They're just a little over the top for me, haha.

Other than them, I can't think of any other breed I truly don't like. I have a very hard time trusting APBTs and other Bully breeds around my own dogs, but I do like them. I just worry about DA after a few pretty serious incidents with breeds of those types.

I think this is the real problem I have with the breed... soooo many badly bred examples! The vast majority of the Boxers I meet have faces that could pass for Pit Bulls; they are obviously very out of standard, and the breeders obviously aren't trying to better the breed with that. And a lot of the owners excuse their pushy, rude behavior as goofy and endearing. Incidentally, most of the Boxers I meet who look like classic, well bred Boxers are polite and friendly. It makes me sad because I used to really love the breed, now I cringe when I see one coming into day camp. I swear, they will join forces to bully and stalk other dogs... D:

There are breeds I wouldn't want for myself. Either their own breed traits that have been selected for over time just wouldn't suit me or they're badly handled/trained is the reason. I try not to generalize as far as blaming extreme behavior on the breed because behavior in and of itself is not genetic. But there ARE tendancies and traits...propensities toward behaviors that don't appeal to everyone and that's why we have so many breeds to choose from. I had a few GSDs and you would have loved them. They were mah-vel-ous with people, not dog aggressive and just super trustworthy dogs with children and everyone. Try not to let a few bad experiences ruin your openess to breeds....as far as distrusting them too much. Mostly, horrible behavior is due to human mishandling....sometimes a poor temperament, sometimes something else, but it's not all about the breed itself. People whine about Chihuahuas being ornery and yappy. It even says so in the breed descriptions sometimes. I could show you a kazillion examples that defy that, my own two little dumplings, Jose` and Chulita included.

I'm wary of the herding/guarding breeds until i've met them. I know what they were breed for and I respect that. Some people who say they have had a bad experiance with them (not anybody here) might not have respected that about them. I don't go walking round on tiptoe but I also don't approach the dog until it is comfortable with me.
I actually love these breeds (although my neighbours GSD is doing her best to discourage me!)but they are the ones I wouldn't rush to make a fuss over, even if their owner says they are friendly. activley

There are a few breeds of dog that I would bever choose to own but I don't actively dislike them.

MandyPug you should met the shih tzu that goes to our agility class. She is so laid back it is unbelieveable. It was almost like she said, 'oh agility again no thanks'. They were going to retire her because she wasn't enjoying herself and was just plodding round but then they did something to her and now she is zooming round :D

There are no breeds I'd say I would never own. Except maybe english bulldogs, but only because their health problems make them insanely expensive to keep.

However, I'm really not a fan of labs, border collies, and most toy breeds. For a variety of reasons. However if the right dog came in a package as one of those breeds, then so be it.

My boxer is well mannered. And he even knows his colors! :rofl1:

However, there's a reason that I settled on a standard poodle and not a boxer as I set out to find a SD prospect. It is hard to find a good boxer. I got very lucky, as mine was a stray, so there was no telling his background or breeding. He could have turned out to be a holy terror lol

The amazing part is, he's not even really slobbery :yikes: :rofl1:

Your Boxer is also lucky enough to have you as an owner! Not some stupid bro... :p

And he's white. Everyone knows white Boxers are the best. I was soooo close to adopting a white Boxer, a few years ago, with a pink nose!

There are lots of breeds that I would never own, either they dont appeal to me lookswise or there is something that I just couldnt handle with them (example: BC: energy; giant breeds: short life span) But that doesnt mean I dislike the breed... I dont mind playing with someones BC for an hour and then sending it home for them to play with for another 5, LOL.

There are tons of breeds that just dont fit my lifestyle but I dont dislike the breed because of it.

My first dog was attacked and almost killed by a golden retriever, any poorly bred, poorly socialized, poorly trained dog can attack... it doesnt matter what breed it is.
