Well i don't know where you live but here in the UK its illegal for anyone but a vet to dock tails and then you will have a hard time finding one, a dogs tail is docked at about 3 days old, never when they are a few weeks or years unless they damage the tail badly

The problems don't stem from docking when young, its from people getting a dog and docking it at eight weeks or having the tail injured years later and having an amputation.

My friend has a boston she got form amish country and they did the hack job themselves and you can feel the bones at the end of her tail. Its disgusting but doesn't bother her anymore. Best the vet could guess was they cropped when the dog was three to four weeks old. The thinkg we can't figure out is bostons are supposed to be a naturally docked breed right? So we don;t know if they jsut thought it was supposed to be cut anyway or maybe she did have a long tail. Bad people is really all it comes down to.

Docking the tail any older than 3days old is incredibly painful, very hard to heal and can result in infection of the tissue and/or bone. Gangrene can set in and cause further amputation be necessary and may never fully heal correctly. If done improperly by someone who doesn't know what they are doing (no one but a vet should ever do this) pups can even sustain damage to the sphincter muscle (depending on how close the crop is done) which would result in a lifetime of inability to control bowel movements.
