At the moment there are two keeshonds in the house...

So today my mom and I went to the bookstore and on the way out passed our local PetSmart. Well it just so happens that today was adoption day. We were passing the store when out of the corner of my eye, we saw a young Keeshond. We couldn't resist, and parked the car and went to pet him. After the first few minutes we learned his name was Keegan, and he was about 2 years old. We fell in love the minute he layed in our lap.

Well we started talking to his handler, and found out that he was just rescued from a high kill shelter, and didn't have a foster home. My mom asked about fostering, and thats when we started to get our hopes up.

Now if it were up to my mom and I, we would probably have three dogs by now. The only thing that is stopping us is my dad. He thinks one dog is enough. He's out of town right now and is getting back tomorrow.

We drove home, and talked to our neighbor who is a dog-lover as well. About 30 min later we were back in the car and on our way to get him. We filled out the paperwork, they gave us a crate, and we were officially his foster home. When we got back with him we introduced him and Max by walking them at the same time down the street- it didn't go so well. Max continued his walk with my mom and I took the other guy back home. When they got back we let them get to know eachother in the backyard. However we kept both of their leashes on just in case. This went better then I expected and after a while they both layed down under the patio.

Right now the new guy (who we are calling Ari, which means lion in hebrew I think) is in his crate, we are trying to get him to relax a little bit. Max for the most part is just jealous and confused.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, just regarding getting the two to behave. When my dad calls later we are just going to explain that we saved this dog from being euthanized, which isn't a total lie. If some of you remember, it was exactly this week last year that my mom and I fell in love with another Kees at the same exact place named Tyler (because my moms birthday is Wednesday and mine is next month).

Please send some good vibes that this will all work out (the little guy is adorable)!

Oh my gosh! YAY!!! That's awesome!

For now, um.. don't give food when either dog is near the other. if you give them treats for being good do it while they are AWAY from each other so no one gets nippy. We had that issue with Bamm and Middie.. :(

Oh I hope your dad says yes. I bet you and your mom are the soft spots in your dads heart :) Any ways it will take time for them to get used to each other. It took ours a couple of days. Always be there for the first few days and take careful note of both dogs behavior and have them sleep separate just in case until everyone knows each other well. AWE!!! Thats great :) I love stories like this and I hope dad says yes.

Thanks everyone!

And nolu, we're planning on feeding Ari separately in the basement so there isn't any chance for nippy dominance things. So far everything is pretty much the same, I don't think Max is fully willing to accept him yet. He's barking alot and he pretty much tries to ignore Ari until one of us gives him a bunch of attention.

oh boy--what fun! How old is Max? And does he do well with other dogs in general?
Ari is probably pretty stressed, which Max can pick up on as well. I think exercise is a great stress reducer--give them both a good walk, and then bring them together.

Max is 11, and tends to get a bit territorial when other dogs are around us. However there weren't really any bad fights today. There were a few snarls and scary noises exchanged, but nothing serious. They're supervised every minute, and Ari always has his leash on if he's loose in the house and not in his crate.

One question I did have though regards the crying in his crate. Should we just ignore it? Especially tonight when he's going to be alone.

I always suggest that the dog sleep in the same room as a person. That way he feels more secure, instead of isolated and not sure where you are. If he whines, just ignore it and hopefully he will stop pretty quickly.
