Well, I had Jury Duty yesterday and I showed up at court at 8:00 am and they herded all of us in 'the room' to wait to see what was to be done with us. It actually is a nice big room with a TV, magazines and semi-comfortable seats. Well, my juror number was 38 and around 10:00 am, jurors 1 - 68 were called down to one of the Superior Court courtrooms. We were told the regular schmeel and was told that the trial would last two days (yesterday and today). Well I wasn't chosen and thought I dodged a bullet. We were all taken back to the room and in the meantime, the second group was taken down to the District Court and was picked and proded (sp?) to fill the civil case jury's that where needed for the day. We were let out at 12:20 for lunch and I fully believed that when I returned at 1:20, we would be able to leave (YAY!). WELL, nope. The Court Security (Bailiff) whatever you want to call them, gets up to the microphone and says to all of us "Don't bother looking at your number, you all are going downstairs". They lined us up, were told to remove all hats, shut off all cell phones and beepers and conduct ourselves as respectful adults and that the courtroom is a place of respect and we should act accordanly. I looked at one juror and said "Somehow, I don't think this is a surprise party!" lol.

We got put into another Superior Court Criminal courtroom where we were all but strip searched to pick a 14 (2 alternates) man/woman jury panel. Collectively questioned and separately questioned by the Judge, split into groups according to our juror numbers, challenged by the Prosecutor and Defense attorneys and stared down by them like an eagle spotting its next meal. The trial will last at least two days and most likely a third. This will bring it into Friday because they just picked the panel yesterday. Well, guess what, I'm serving on seat 9! I can't tell you what the case is ('cause I'd have to kill ya, LOL), but, after hearing what the charge was, I KNEW the Asst. District Attorney would most likely want me on the panel only because I am a middle aged woman and fit the 'demographic' in favor of the victem (is that sp. right - doesn't look right, lol)

Anyway, I got to jump in the shower now and make it to Court for 9:00 am. and I'll be stuck there until 4:00. Wish me luck all!!

Oh yeah, I am proud to serve my Civic Duty! :D

I'm sure I'll be bashed for this, but I hate jury duty. not the actual serving, but the way they treat everyone there....like I'm the one on trial or something. last time I was there I didn't get called for the interview until 4PM, after wayyyyyy tooooo much sitting around (which I can't stand) and tooooo much coffee. I was cranky and out of my mouth (before my brain could stop me) came a rant about how people love to sue (it was a civil case) these days...it's the new American way to make money..blah, blah. just another time my mouth got me into trouble.....OF COURSE I was picked. I travelled to town for 4 days, sat around more than I ever want to do again, got treated like crap, only to have the case postponed. I know all about the civic duty thing.......but I still hate the entire procedure.

Good luck Avenlee! I've never been called for Jury service, and guess I won't while I'm over here. Your post has reminded me of the film Runaway Jury - I feel like watching it now!

I served last year. We were treated ok but it was a waste of time. I never got picked for a trial (I guess big bald guys don't fit into too many demographics). A lot of sitting around, then being sent home. I read a good book while I was there, thats about it.

Ugh to me the only thing worse than waiting around down at the courthouse for jury duty is waiting around down at the DMV. I recently postponed a jury duty date because we were away on vacation. So I know I have one coming up in the next few months. Not looking forward to it very much at all.

P.S. Maybe I should shave my head eh DanL? ;)

Just say something chic like...

"I am not racist, I hate everybody equally."

or

"They are only going to let good white folks on the jury, right?"

or

"I have seen a picture of the defendant... He/She just LOOKS guilty!"

:) ;)

Well yah. You openly supported one of the lawyer's sides of the case, of course you're gonna get picked.

I know.....I think he wanted to marry me at the end of my rant. NEVER give opinions like that if you don't want chosen. next time...I taking duct tape for my mouth.

Actually, Debi, if the other side hadn't already used up their byes your rant could just as easily gotten you OFF of the jury, lol! You just have to keep track of how many people each side has taken a flyer on so you know which way to rant :D

My number has come up, but the clerks and the judges just laughed and told me not to bother - with my being a paralegal, especially since I have only worked for the underdog's side, there's no way the attorney for the other side would ever allow me to sit on the jury.

Kind of a shame, when you think about it, because I actually know what to look for and can step aside from emotions and make a decision based on law - which of course is something prosecutors particularly don't want to happen under any circumstances!

When I served the did call me for one jury but it was a case that had been widely published in the newspaper. I told the judge that I had read all about it and he asked me if I could put that aside, and I said no, that I'd already formed an opinion of the defendent and wouldn't be able to judge him fairly. They let me go.

Actually, they did know I am a Paralegal. You have to fill out a questionaire and I, of course, listed my occupation. When I got back into the courtroom, the Prosecutor challenged and dismissed 3 picked jurors and I was the first replacement requested by him. The Defense attorney challenged two of the Prosecutor's choices (all but me) and replaced the two with his choices. They then said they were both satisfied and there it was. As I heard the testimonies and evidence all day today, I can see why the Defense was smart enough not to just 'toss' me because of my occupation. Lots of grey area ... It will be interesting to hear what comes out of tomorrow's testimonies.

Its still boring though! Lots of sidebar talks and removing us for what they call a break  Then the bailiff comes in for the announcement of the two minute warning that turns into the twenty minute warning. BTW, this is only the second time I was called to serve with the first one, I didn't have to show up at all. Guess its payback.

I was working for a criminal defense attorney at the time . . . no way was the prosecution going to let me sit on a jury, lol!

And I think the clerks were terrified of what would happen if I weren't at work to keep my attorney out of trouble - everyone liked him, but he would make himself a royal pain on a regular basis and the clerks and judges would do just about anything not to have to deal with him. We had a nice system going, actually. I'd go to the courthouse, judge's office or DA's office when we needed to do something, and they'd do it without a fuss. All I had to say was, "I hope we can go ahead and handle this while I'm here so I can keep Charles out of your hair." And I'd leave with what I came after . . . :D

I meant to say Foreperson not Floorperson  My mind was whacky last night. We got the vote down to 11 to 1 in favor of not guilty. We spent 4 hours (no lie) arguing and trying to convince the 1 to change his mind. We're back in Court this morning to see what we all can come up with. Hopefully, I'll be done before noon today. At least, because we are now a deliberating jury, the coffee and lunch are on the 'house' . LOL
