ACK.
I sooo look forward to watching BOTH of these gorgeous dogs grow up!

And your photos are ALWAYS breath-taking! <3

OK, lighting and setting question:

For your outside shots, what is your aperture typically set at? ISO? Shutter?
I ask because it appears that your lens would be wide with the all the pretty bokeh, but if I tried to open my lens wide outside, it'd been an over-exposed MESS. So, I'm assuming you have it opened wide and your shutter SUPER high?
Is this so?

And what do you use for lighting in your home and studio for those awesome, no-flash-yet-perfectly-exposed shots?

Sorry!!! Your photos are just soooo good! <3

So pretty much if I'm inside or outside I shoot at 1.8 or 2.0 or so. Of course if I'm trying to get both dogs in focus at the same time I might adjust this- but I mostly try to just move the dogs so they're on the same 'plane' so I can still shoot at my beloved 1.8. I love the creaminess it adds to images- plus I rarely have to worry about a slow shutterspeed.

For outside, I always basically shoot in the shade- very rarely full sun unless I can't control what the dogs are doing or if I'm backlighting them. I still shoot at 1.8 or so, adjust my shutterspeed so it's very fast - sometimes as fast as like 1/8000, and then keep my ISO nice and low like 100 or 200.

When I'm inside I simply put my dogs facing the windows then I sit right by the windows (without blocking the light too much) and just get them to look towards the windows.

I shoot the exact same way for kids and families. I shoot with a 5d mark ii and 85 1.8 but sometimes I use one of my employees 40d's and unless I'm using a higher ISO- the pictures are almost identical. The 85 is an amazing lens- just a heads up- its mostly an outdoor lens. It's the more magical version of the 50 IMO, but only really reserved for outside (the only reason I use it inside is because I have a 5d which if full frame and makes the lens actually 'shorter' than it is on other cameras).

HTH! :)

Thank you guys so much! :) Rachael- that was especially sweet of you to write- that made my day!

I would like to say I'm going to give him a rest for a few days- but this weekend we're heading to my grandma's for the weekend and I want to try and get some shots of Jonah and I together since he doesn't have any. We'll see how my mom does when I set up the camera for her- she's usually not bad! :)

Such a cute puppy!!

Looks like Jude and he are getting along well, too, which is awesome.

Also, tempted to drive B up to your area for some awesome pictures. :) My iPhone pictures just don't cut it, lol.

If anyone is serious and wants a session- I'm happy to do it for chazzers for free :) I don't actually usually do pet pictures so it's not something I would ever charge for. I don't think I'm too close to most of you though! :)

Thanks guys. Jonah has SUCH a baby face. He looks like a little wolf.

Well, even if we're not close enough for sessions, you just keep posting up photos of your two pups, and I think most of us will be SUPER happy with that. :D

And thank you for the settings info. I'll try a wider lens outside and just up my shutter speed and lower my iso outside. You're awesome. Thanks! :)
