Just wondering if anyone has any insight, or has had any good experiences with any certain brand.

About a year ago Dally had a fluke accident where she hit her back leg on the edge of the door while going to into my mom's room. We knew right away it was serious though as she was whining and panting from the pain, and couldn't put an any weight on it - she didn't even want to touch it to the ground when she was resting. This dog is tough as nails and has never reacted like that, even after being in some tumbles.

Longggg story short the vet (not our usual one) said that she'd have to get surgery which was going to got a few thousand. It was a big decision so we decided to play it by ear and see how she was in a couple of days - keeping her on pain killers, of course. After only a few days she started putting weight back on the leg, and in no time (even after the pain killers) she was back to her old self.

She's a very active dog and even at the end of the day the injury doesn't affect her at all. I do notice a difference in her gait after a lot of exercise (like after working cows), or if she's landed hard while playing frisbee. She doesn't limp, but when she's tired she drags the tips of her toes a little bit on that leg. I probably wouldn't notice, but we have carpeted floors so it's easy to hear her drag her toes every once in a few steps. So, I'm entertaining the thought of a joint supplement just as a kind of maintenance - she doesn't really need it now but I'd like to support her as much as possible now so she doesn't get more stiff or sore in a few years.

We use Liquid Health Level 5000 Equine-Canine.

If you look at the supplement levels, it's waaay more concentrated than any other formula on the market, and is the only formula that contains msm, shark cartilage, and perna mussels. It's also got a boatload of antioxidants and digestive enzymes.

When Kaia broke her toe we put her on it while she healed (some of the ingredients help with swelling and stuff too). Moxie has an older GSD that was on a slew of other joint supplements when she got to where she could hardly stand up any more. They switched her to liquid health and now she's like a brand new dog again. :)

ETA: I know of a dog who blew out his knee SUPER bad as a puppy and had to have several reconstructive surgeries. The orthopedist said he'd have to have at least two more after he finished growing. His owners put him on this supplement and when he went in for xrays at 1 year the doc was flabbergasted. He didn't need surgery. Doesn't walk with a limp. He's kept on it daily and is about 6 years old now and going strong.

My dogs do well with Glycoflex tablets.

I've known people who did not see any improvement with Glycoflex, but have good results with Cosequin, which didn't help mine any.

dasuquin and fish oil. steve's sports vet recommends starting active/working/sport dogs on both at a year and keeping them on it for life.

i did impulse purchase some GNC Pets Ultra Mega formula joint supplement for Luce recently. it was more expensive than what i pay for dasuquin and i don't really see a difference either way, so we'll likely go back to the dasuquin when it's gone.

Thank you! This is great - I've had a lot of experience with equine joint supplements but I'm totally out of my element on this one. Dasuquin sounds familiar - I think even I've heard good things about it.

I like Recovery SA for clients because it contains a bit of a natural anti-inflammatory too.

There's also Sasha's Blend which many agility folks up here swear by.

I have used dasuquin here. I am really pleased with it. Riley gets alot of back pain flair ups, has a bad knee which puts alot of strain on his other knee, overcompensation problems in the front which develops into bad sholder pain. Through all these joint issues though he doesnt have one spot of arthritis or any visable joint health problems (he is 8 1/2). He has been on it for years. I like the studies behind it, the product/companies reputation, the chewable tablet part, and the discount i get part (;)).
