Yes I am guilty, I fell in love with another breed. lol.
When I go to Uni, I will probably be living in Town
But I love my pets. the dogs I am really interested in are Setters and POinters and kelpies, High energy breeds so I dont want to be keeping one of them in town. But If i find a home with a bckyard and all, I was thinking JRT.
Or maybe Chi.
I won't have a tonne of money, another reason why I don't want a big dog. Bu I am willing to put in for a long walk atleast once a day.

Sound good? Or is there anything else you suggest.

PS: Look at this hehe so cute

Enjoy University without worry of a dog. The 1st year or 2 go the dorm way.... meet people and grow. I missed my golden TERRIBLY , but life moves on and years pass quickly. except for the food intake , a small dog takes the same amunt of $$, time, attention etc. Think of it as a long commercial , then back to what you really want to be seeing .

If you don't want a high energy dog, I wouldn't suggest you get a JRT! :D They demand a lot of attention and have heaps of energy, especially when they are puppies (they get so hyper!). If you want any info on Chihuahuas I can give you some insight.

I have a JRT mix, Colby. I've learned from her that jacks tend to be stubborn - extremely stubborn at that, yappy at times, can be nippy (training may eliminate this problem), and highly energetic.

I think that sums up JRTs pretty much! :D My JRT x can be really stubborn at times - if you ask him to do something he doesn't want to do, he WON'T do it. He also makes an excellent guard dog and never tires from barking (in other words, he can bark, bark, bark), though he has gotten much better for some odd reason. Also, he can bite hard if you get in his way (he bites before he realises what he's done- though he very rarely bites), and he always has loads of energy. Though, when he wants to be left alone he'll let you know.

Sounds like a jack!! Colby looks mostly canaan, but in personality she's got quite a bit of jack!!! She's great at sensing things....we say, "If Colby likes someone, you know you're safe."

I'm partial to chis also. I have 2. I always thought I was a med dog type person but thse 2 just stole my heart and now I can't get enough of them. When ever we help w/ the rescue I always get the little dogs to adopt out, especially the chis.
The aren't that difficult to take care of but they aren't just a fasion accessory either. They want and need lovin' and snuggles (I know what a horrible thing hehe).
If money is and issue (w/ school and the apt/house) look into adopting from a shelter or rescue. You can find purebreeds and mixes.

hello,

We have had our JRT now for a few months. We researched the breed and knew that the breed has been know to be very high energy, and.... SHE REALLY IS!!!

We are presently staying in an apartment, until our house is completed and she requires alot of exercise and mental stimulation. She needs to be walked in the am and after supper and we play with her throughout the day. If not she is bound to get herself in trouble by chasing the cat around like a maniac and chewing whatever is lying around.

Fortunately for us we were able to rearrange our schedules and she is left in a kennel for only short periods of time at home when we go out. I remember what it was like to be in university and I think that the JRT is going to be a big time committment ,so really think about it.

We are lucky that our JRT is easy going and hardly barks, she is loving and sweet and I wouldn't give her up for anything but like anything can be trying at times (especially when you're really tired after working shifts)

Hope that helps if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!!!

Thanks guys, yeah, I was thinking, having had dogs my whole life, I just wont feel safe without one. I dont mind having a little dog so long as it will warn me aswell. I hate walking without the dogs because I know I am much safer with them than by myself.
So maybe i should continue thinking,

I am looking for a dog
that can live in town (possibly apartment or small home)
Is protective
seems to get on well with cats and rabbits but ofcourse they can be split if needed
fun loving

i think thats it, maybe a JRT woukld be better when I have a big house eh?
so any suggestions (oh, i like bigger dogs better)

Well, terriers have super high prey drive, so many of them are not good with small animals. My oldest sister, Jackie, has a bunny - one of the animals a terrier would hunt - and when she comes to visit, she usually brings Tizzy the rabbit. Tizzy has taught the girls to be careful of her, 'cause she rules the entire house when she's here. :D

i thik your right aurorab, they arn't just a fashion accessory which many people often think to use them as, but when people use them as a fashion accessery (paris hilton lol) it usually means all they want them for is snuggles, so thats not the problem i think the problem is the peopl actually walking and feeding, and cleaning up the doo doo of their little accessories that people who only want them asa decoration peice often do not do.
Now, not to brag,,,lol. I know jacks r one of the most hyper creatures on this earth (i have to friends with purebreds). but mine is jack/pom. ill tell ya i was not expecting him to be this...... calm(yea i said calm)... i got a total angel god sent in this case..i was preparing for the worst. he took after the jacks appearence, but im guessing because of his temperment he took after th epom. but i have read poms are usually not to calm either at timess..i onno..lol

I should do some reading, I'm not sure if the breed is good with small animals. But maybe a pug? The once my friend is petsitting barks when people are coming (good for burglaries), and I was surprised of how playful they were. They also make excellent lap dogs... I should read on them tho. Chihuahuas are great too tho

Ouch, yeah my grandparents owns two. Tried to breed them but the female had a miscarriage or something. I'm thankful that she was not pregnant... I think my GPs gave up now...
