Well... sometime.. :)

It won't be anytime real soon but I want to learn as MUCH as possible between now and then.. I was thinking of getting the pup into weight pulling.. seems like a wonderful way to keep the pupper busy and in great shape..

Chances are I'll be living in Newfoundland so unless there's big change here there won't be any clubs, etc so I'll kind of be on my own.. I'll probably never be able to enter the pupper in any competitions or whatever but I think it would be great fun for the two of us at the very least! :)

So, if anyone knows any good webpages, forums, etc that I can use as a resource for learning about the breed and weight pulling please let me know.. i really know NOTHING about weight pulling.. maybe this won't be the best idea for me.. but I really want to learn as much as possible..

Thanks all!! :)

I used to do weight pull with my last dog, and it was a blast! It's an amazingly simple thing to teach.

First, be sure you get a good weight pull harness--not a sledding harness. Weight pull harnesses have a lot of padding, distribute the weight differently, and have a spreader bar to take pressure of the dog's hips.

Don't start pulling heavy weight until your pup is fully grown. A pup can practice wearing the harness and pulling light weight, but too much too soon can hurt your dog. When you do start weight pulling, be sure to build up the weight gradually.

And above all, make your dog confident. You dog has to believe that he can pull anything. For this, you may need a helper to stand behind the sled/cart when you get to very heavy weights. If your dog tries a few times and can't pull it, your helper needs to push the cart on the next pull. That way, your dog will be convinced that he did it himself.

And above all, keep it positive. Dogs with a good drive absolutely love weight pull. My last dog would go insane with joy every time I brought out the harness.

Squid, I don't wanna rain on your parade at all. But with the ban here in Ontario, you can bet it's going to slowly move west. Like everything does, such as the smoking ban. If you're going to do it, I'd do it asap.

Aww.. thanks so much for the tips! Sounds like your pupper really loved it! I really want to give the dog something to do that it just loves! Something to really look forward to..
Can you pretty much train any pit do it it? Does there need to be a certain size or build? Or just a purebred pit? I'll definitely be getting my baby from a reputable breeder.. that's not even a question... unless I'm able to find a rescue pit at the time I'm hoping to purchase one.. :)

I understand where you're coming from.. but I can't rush into something like this because of a fear of a ban.. if it really does get to that point I will move.. I've discussed it with my fiance already and he agrees.. I don't want to live in a place that bans dogs because of breed.. especially since I've always hoped to have a 'scary' breed.. :p
So far there are no plans to ban any breeds.. there aren't many here anyway.. but if it does come to that and I am still well and able I will be moving. :)
And Newfoundland is East.. :p heehee.. we be the most eastern part of North America! :)

brief intro to weight pull

i don't know what kind of clubs are around you and whether or not you even need a purebred dog to do it. lots of different breeds compete in weight pull- not just bullies. there have even been miniature poodles who've titled.

Hahaha I swear I knew that, my boyfriends Mom is from Newfoundland...was a typo.
I'm not saying rush into it, but most all things I've seen start in Ontario and eventually affect the whole country unfortunetly..

Squiddy . . . we may have to learn about weight pulling together. I'd love to get Shiva into it. That dog is the proverbial Irresistable Force, and she needs something to do to build her self-confidence.

I would deffinately highly recommend getting the book Colby's Book On American Pit Bull Terriers.. My boyfriend gave me a copy and I''ve only just begun reading it but already I''ve learned so much on the breed. It''s packed full of information and has some wonderful pictures. As the name suggests it was written by Mr. Colby who truly is an ambassador of the breed. HAve you looked at any particular kennels yet?

I''d love to get Ronan into weight pulling too but alas dogsledding costs enough money as it is, I don''t have any to spend on weight pulling

I''ve also been recommended all five books by Richard Stratton

Any dog with good health and good drive can do weight pull. There are pictures online of the cutest little Jack Russell doing weight pull.

I'm doing it with Voodoo when he gets old enough. It's a great way to build strength and give a dog good exercise. You don't need a lot of space to do it, either. I would do it with Zeus, but he has very low drive and I don't think he'd enjoy it.

you don't even have to have a pit to do weight pulling, any dog can do it. all your dog has to have is the want to please you.

Heehee.. sure sure.. :p j/k
I know what you mean though.. I hope it never reaches here however I am at least mentally prepared to move if that happens.. before I actually get a pup I'll be VERY sure I am financially prepared to move as well.. if that is necessary.. :)

I've been thinking about doing weight pulling with Hades eventually, but for now I'd rather focus on the obedience. Yes yes, so I can title my muts, I am lame.

But before Hades knew how to heel he was a great puller. ROFL :D
