I can't say I've every been bashed for having a fit pug LOL...but I don't really post on any pug forums...they never seem to be very active

I like to have all my dogs at a good weight....and have had some negative comments about "thin dogs" but I just let it roll ......I know my dogs will be around for much longer then some of the sausage dogs I see walking around

Which Lab boards? Lol the one im on is all about keeping Labs at a healthy lean weight. And they airn't Ceasar Milan followers. I actually enjoy it there alot. No fat couch potato dogs. Most compete in dock diving and hunting trials.

Not all Lab boards are like that ;)
Can you PM me the site pretty please?:D

Jack says no fatty labbies over here...I've never been accused of not feeding him but I think that's because he is fluffy enough that you can't see how lean he is until he's wet....

Are they supposed to be fluffy? I've honestly never met a Lab that wasn't from one of those "Purebread Laboradors $250" ads so i don't really know exactly 100% what they're supposed to look like other than not fat... And the Silver Lab i know... Well i'll have to PM you the picture of that one, they're breeding him and his whole look scares me. Not to mention he bunny hops instead of trotting normally...

Well, they are supposed to be double coated with a protective outer coat. The bench bred dogs tend to be furrier I've noticed, most of the field breds have thinner coats. Plus, Jack is dried with a forced air dryer every week after swimming so I think that makes the hair stand up more. it is not so noticeable when he is allowed to dry naturally.

The standard:
Coat
The coat is a distinctive feature of the Labrador Retriever. It should be short, straight and very dense, giving a fairly hard feeling to the hand. The Labrador should have a soft, weather-resistant undercoat that provides protection from water, cold and all types of ground cover. A slight wave down the back is permissible. Woolly coats, soft silky coats, and sparse slick coats are not typical of the breed, and should be severely penalized.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say "I have a Rottweiler that is twice the size of your's" as if to brag. Then I see their dog and it the same height and looks like a sausage. I feel so sorry for the dogs that are so fat. You know in many cases it is their owner's that are lazy and toss food at them instead of taking them for a walk.

I do have one chubby dog right now but that is because he has chronic lameness issues. His weight is always a struggle and he is living on such a tiny amount of food. I don't like fat dogs though, I think they look ugly and it makes me sad knowing they are not healthy because of it.

My uncle's rotties were massively fat, it made me so sad and no matter how much i told him that free feeding them Alpo and refilling their bowl everytime he walked past wasn't good for them, he just scoffed. He had three, one died from a poisoned bird and the last two (the other one's parents, don't get me started on that) died of heart attacks... It was awful, they were such sweet dogs.

The vets being oblivious bothers me more than anything. It's strange because I took my cat to the vet and when he was deciding whether he was ideal or overweight he almost wrote overweight but then said "well....I CAN feel the ribs...I'll say ideal but a bit on the plus size" so I thought, oh he knows what he's talking about, he wanted ribs at least, I thought Neko was overweight but close enough.

Then my uncle took Phoebe to the vet. Phoebe has always been a bit overweight, she eats nasty food and gets part of all of their meals (they shove food into her as they eat). However over the winter she gained a lot of weight, I think it's because uncle is on unemployment all winter so eats lunch at home instead of at work so Phoebe gets some of that meal as well, plus if it's too cold she only gets a quarter of her usual walk. Anyway I was shocked when I saw how large she had gotten, I don't see her much over the winter. The vet however said she was in the ideal range. I'm telling you you CANNOT feel this dog's ribs at all. And of course uncle can now tell me I'm wrong, why would he listen to his 18 year old niece and not the professional?
My mom said the vet said she's ideal because he's scared of my uncle, he's made scenes there before (charging him for pulling teeth during the spay, charging for disposing of poop, about her stitches from the spay not disolving, etc.) where he screams at the vet and vet techs. So maybe that's why, who knows lol.

You all are doing wonderfully by your dogs, they are lucky to have you as their owners and they all look beautiful. More importantly they are all healthy and active.

... The number of people that will shun me and the pictures i post on my Pug Forums simply because i keep my Pugs fit and trim.

Ugh sorry for the meltdown... I guess i'm just not a "pug person" and i really don't want to be. I care about health more than that super smushed nose or the "stocky" being equal to "obese" attitude.

End Rant.
Nope, you're not a "pug person." You're a dog person.

I honestly don't understand why people would want their dogs to be fat and inactive.

Yeesh, good thing the boxer forum I'm on isn't like what you guys describe lol. That forum I'd say is pretty similar to this one.

People are just... almost obsessed with having overweight dogs. I would rather have my dogs be slightly on the underweight side, rather than overweight.

same for all bull & mastiff breeds, fat masses that can't get out of their own shadow

The physical therapy vet we worked with after jack's surgery had another client that was a female mastiff that was regularly shown from a top show breeder. She had gotten surgery for something that was torn and in the course of the physical therapy after the surgery she had to 30 lbs just to get down to what the vet considered a healthy weight....

I will say that my physical therapy vet was very into keeping dogs at a truly healthy weight--probably had a lot to do with her line of work though...

It makes me sad to see so many overweight dogs.

I think keeping our dogs fit and healthy is a pretty basic ownership responsibility. Whatever the breed.

Who would want to see a dog that cannot walk without huffing/puffing? With joint problems that are caused or exacerbated by the extra weight? Dogs that want to move around so little and do not want to play or go for a run because their metabolism is shot and it is uncomfortable? :( When old age comes around for our dogs I'd like to think that I can keep them as fit and trim as possible to help counteract the effects of a slowing heart, arthritis and all the other ailments that can effect our elderly companions.

Your pugs are beautiful, btw. You know you are doing the right thing. :) A dog should be able to enjoy being a dog without the burden of extra weight.

If you guys think it's bad with dogs, I should introduce you to a few cat people. It seems acceptable in the cat communities to find overweight (even downright OBESE) cats "cute".

Yes, because it's cute to have an animal who's going to develop diabetes, joint issues, heart problems etc, etc, not to mention die far too young, just because you can't be bothered to pick up the food bowl. *grumbles*

I've only seen large couch potatoe pugs, so yours are so refreshing to see! My boyfriend really wants a pug in a couple of years, and I've been trying to persuade him to check out other breeds because I want to be active with dog sports. So if our future pug could be anything like your Izzie I would be thrilled!

I want to make Izzie into a pretty darn good agility competitor, i've always wanted to do dog sports therefore always wanted a cardi but mom wanted pugs.

On another note, the new thread there is all about "Being the Alpha". They're going on about how to get their dogs to go out the doors after them so the dogs know the person is alpha and dominant. Everyone else is all about making their dogs submissive except for me and one other person. It's hilarious. One even said she eats all her food in front of the dogs before she feeds them their food to show she's alpha. It made me laugh that they take it to such an extreme.
