Blaze seems to be really itchy lately.

While I away last week my parents found a flea on Blaze (they were all due for flea/tick meds) so they purchased some Frontline Plus and put it on the dogs, washed the beddings, vacuumed etc.

But he seems to still be itching? I've check him every day and don't see anything. We switched foods about a month ago, but the itching only started about a week ago. Could it be his skin is drying out from being in the water so much? I'd say he's getting wet in some form or fashion each day.

Can you recommend any supplements to give? Fish oil? Any raw foods that might help with dry skin?

Could also be allergies, I know Suzie gets them sometimes, and its a little hard to treat them because its hard to narrow down.

Other then that, is there some kind of doggy lotion? :p There probably is, I just don't know the types

All my dogs have been terribly itchy lately. I did find a few fleas on Jayne and the corgis, so I'm guessing Katie brought them with her from the kennel. We killed 'em with Capstar and baths, the cats got Frontlined, the house and yard got blasted with diatomaceous earth.

One week later and they're STILL itching. I checked them over and NO fleas. So today I'm bathing them in MicroTek and applying ResiSoothe... hopefully it helps. :(

Yep, checked all over and NO FLEAS or ticks. I'll have to check out MicroTek and ResiSoothe.

Frontline does not work here, just wanted to send a quick warning ;)

Fish oil couldn't hurt ;) Maybe try raw egg?

Sending no-more-itchy vibes for all the itchy chaz dogs! Maddie and I know from experience that it is no fun!

Yeah, we haven't used Frontline Plus in a few years. Thought I'd give it another try since we got a month's worth free.

fish oil is good for itchy skin. steve's been itchy lately too. i suspect all the swimming, but it could be some mild allergies.

Fish oil helps reduce inflammation, benedryl and cortisone spray also help. The problem with flea bite dermatitis is that it takes time (sometimes a long time) for the itchies to go away completely. My elder spaniel will itch for weeks following a single flea bite so we try to be careful to nuke the problem as soon as it starts.

Is it all over, or just certain areas?

I think my Lucy-bug may have mosquito bites. They've been nasty as heck around here lately, and our walks are often in the evening, once it starts to cool down, which is their favorite time to come out and feast.

All over.

How much Fish oil do you guys give? I bought a pack of capsuls that are 1200mg each. The bottle says up to four pills a day. Is this true for dogs, too?

Maddie gets one capsule a day, per her dermatologist. She's in the 20-25# range, so I imagine his would be doubled??
I don't think you can "OD" on fish oil (please someone correct me if I'm wrong). If you give too much you'll be able to tell with his stools

Probably still just scratching from flea bites. :) At work if dogs ever come in with parasites, after the flea shampoo I wash them in Quick Relief Neem shampoo (by Natures Specialties) to soothe their skin.

Morgan has been itchy, too, though he does have seasonal allergies. If he is REALLY FREAKING ITCHY on a particular day, I will throw a couple Benadryl (recommended by his vet) in with his breakfast or dinner, and that does give him relief.

I believe it's 500 mg per 10 pounds for a "normal" dose. You can double that for a therapeutic dose, which may be helpful for the time being (and not harmful -- Bailey gets the higher amount daily -- but I wouldn't go higher than that). You could also give a sardine a day; I recently had a vet suggest doing that instead, since it's more bioavailable (but way more gross!).

Thanks for the heads up, Sally. I don't think the bottle contained any of those words, but I'll double check now.

Bailey, thanks for the info about how much to give.
