he yelps and cries if i grab him by his scruff, when i know it doesnt hurt him.
The hell it doesn't. It not only can cause cervical damage, but it causes future defense reactions and distrust of humans. A really dumb thing to do to a dog. It is not the way to teach a dog what you want.

if you arent there to discipline the second your dog misbehaves, then you should expect people to do it themselves.
Not in MY house, I don't and NOT to MY dog! No one has the right to touch my dog. If they don't like how my dog behaves, they most certainly are not obliged to be within 50 yds of my dog. In fact, if someone scruffed my dog or did anything more than verbal, they'd be asked to leave and not come back. With a verbal correction, they'd be asked not to do it again. (as in my example above)

Missed your good post Shadowface. Yeah...what the heck situation would my dog be in where someone else has to give direrctions? Never. My Doberman is a one family dog and wouldn't take too much direction from others unless I am right there. He has sat on cue from others to get a treat when greeting because I've conditioned him to a little bit. But for the most part, nope....most dogs are loyal to their own, not to strangers. It's a dog thing more than a breed thing. But some breeds are more that way than others.

Sadly, Duncan, some people's idea of discipline is my idea of abuse. If anyone were to discipline any of my animals, depending upon the situation, they would be politely asked (ordered) to leave.

I'm not quite so irresponsible as you seem to be, expecting the world to do my job. In Squirt's house Baby is allowed to do exactly what Squirt allows her to do, not whatever the guests decide she's not allowed to do. If the guests don't like it, instead of assaulting her dog, they may leave.

if he had pulled so hard it hurt, you would have heard your dog gag, not cry.
Yes, because when things hurt, we gag. Catch my sarcasm? When things hurt, we CRY or LASH OUT. So do dogs. When you are not only hurting but CHOKING your dog they gag.

and if your dog listens to nobody but you, you are running a high risk of that dog causing an accident
Well I won't be running the high risk that my dog will respond to your "sit" command and watch you rob my home. (generic "you" of course). I want my dog to listen to me. I do not want her to listen to you. I never want my dog to be confused or ever have to choose as to whose command she should follow.

:yikes: Let's hope that one day when he's a lot bigger, he doesn't decide to show you how it hurts.

As Noludoru has already said very well, not all people train their dogs in the same manner. If you were in my home and grab one of my dogs by the collar to correct them then you had best do it quickly because I would be grabbing for the back of your shirt to correct you!

I don't think that Junior would let ANYONE get him by the collar like that. And I would kick the living daylights of anyone trying to mistreat my dog. I have many people not come to my home anymore since they don't like dogs. Well, bad for them. I won't kick my dog out for them. many others still come and he "senses" who's OK and not. Do this to my dog, in MY house and I would erase your name from my memory. Christ how can some people be this mean?

Dojo well said. I tell people that if they don't like dogs or cats, then they would do better not to come here, as my pets do not get locked out for anybody. That's the rule. If you don't come to my home, I won't be offended in the least. Even if you are allergic, putting my cats or dog away isn't going to help you one whit, so I would rather you stay healthy and not come here.

I do n't know how to pull pieces of posts forward, but Duncan 15, you are ridiculous. In my house, with my dog, it is me who disciplines the dog. She is only 4 months old, and a gi ant breed dog. Noone is going to manhandle her. She doesn't jump on the table anymore and does great. One time she jumps on the counter, so the f**k what. I was not offended by Baby, but by my son in law. And if that is all you have to say, pm me so I CAN TELL YOU WHAT i REALLY THINK.
