hehe..

I am wondering what everyone elses Goldens personalitys are like.

Mine is probably the most exciteable, exuberent boy ever!! I have met a few others at the park and what not but just in general.

He is perfectly trained at home, but he has major issues listening to me when we go out. His absoutel FAVORITE thing is to meet new people and dogs, he just goes CRAZY! He gets so excited sometimes he starts coughing and hacking.

I can get him to do a few commands at the dog park, but its almost like the benefits (treats or pets) isn't worth it to him while there are people or dogs around. Any ideas ??

When I walk him he is totally great, loosh leash, will sit, down, etc.. unless he sees another dog then he acts like a lunatic. I have to force him to sit and block his view.. are your goldens like this?? lol
My poor mom has been knocked down my him about 20 times since we have had him.

I take him to daycare, I take him to that park, hes been going daily for social time since he was 3 months old. I have no clue why he still is so nutty about it!

I really want him to calm down somehow, is it an age thing? He is three years old now.

It's so funny, since we got Hugo I have noticed how much more exciteable he is. Hugo is such a lazy, laid back dog. I thought he would be a handful, but Zac at three years old is 100 times more of a handful than Hugo! As a pup too, Zac was an absolute terror, and so far Hugo has been honestly a breeze to deal with in comparison.. (hes a cane corso)

Just curious on everyone elses Goldens.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE my Zac, he is my best buddy, I just find this part of his personality challenging!! My favorite breed is goldens, so I will put up with wahtever they wanna give me but, I really want him to become a therapy dog one day and I am worried he will never be calm enough hehe.

Wish I could help . None of my Goldens were like this, but I got Chip as a foster (at 4 ) because his family found him just too much . They felt he needed more excessive activity , more fun. more games etc. I could not do this and had him settle in with my couch potato Bubba....he thought they wanted him to do the hyper stuff.... within 3 months I adopted him and he sighed that he could be a Golden ! It could be his breeding. I suggest no horseplay... alot of loving and quiet time ... as you know, he loves being brushed and being with you. Let me know how you're doing. Give him some retrieving jobs... paper/ mail etc. Not as a game....just duty and reward.

Boris used to be the same way, but he's calmed down a lot now. He will still try to go see most dogs, but he isn't crazy about it. I'm thinking that maybe it's because at daycare he gets to play with other dogs and as such he thinks he can play with any dog he sees? Just an idea.

An idea for him going mad at other dogs.

As SOON as you see one approaching and you see him beginning to notice - do a swift about turn and walk in the other direction. Don't let him get to the point where he is excited.

You could also do work to distract him. As another dog walks by in the distance, ak him to sit, stay, give him a treat (before he notcices the dog). Try and get him to remain there. If he gets excited - swift about turn and walk in the opposite direction from the dog.
