So I got to wondering after I was at the park today. And I seen so many dogs who had poor recalls and didnt care about what the owners had t o say about coming back. And was wondering. can you trust your dog offleash?

Blaze I can call of anything he is chasing or where ever he is. a quick whistle and he is running back to me full tilt. Dirt bikes, dogs, birds, rabbits and even deer ect I dont have a problem getting him back to me. Im so glad he listens as it is so importent. and We wouldnt beable to do all the offleahs activities we do daily.

So what about your dog(s)?

Voodoo is good offleash in terms of recall and such. But I don't let him offleash because of the potential for DA.

Zeus, absolutely not. He has no recall to speak of. He will take off like a rocket the instant he finds a scent.

Armani doesnt have a great recall... most of the time if I call him he comes... however, other times not so much... however that being said I dont allow him off leash because of this.

When we're walking by ourselves, Pit's reliable. Doesn't bug anyone, avoids other dogs, comes when I call him. If we're walking with another dog (say Zero) it all goes out the window.

Buster is pretty good. I am careful where I let him off because his recall isn;t good enough to call him off a wallaby or hare. Luckily there is a long stretch of dirt road near my house where I have never seen anything small or hairy and I let him off there sometimes.

I can call him off dogs though, he heels much better, he can walk past/away from other dogs much easier. As soon as the leash goes on is when I physically have to move him.

I am picky about where I let him off because of his issues, but I do let him off sometimes in spots I judge are safe enough.

Um.... no. Well, he is when it's in my yard with no distractions, but that's a pretty limited concept of "off-leash."

Frodo, not really. Only if there is nothing better to do or he thinks that Izzy is going to get a treat, lol. We are working with a long line now but I doubt I'll ever be able to take him out and let him just run.

Izzy was born with an awesome recall. I've called her off of scents, other dogs, deer. It's all good :)

Annoyingly good. LOL

The dog has no sense of the word 'space'. She won't even go enjoy an offleash park by playing because she thinks it's her job to be glued to my side 24/7. On the bright side, I have never had to worry about her wandering off...

Gonzo has a very solid recall. He always comes when called, and comes back to check in on me constantly.

Fozzie is still a work in progress, and will probably ALWAYS be! He is just very nosey. If he sees other people/dogs/animals, he wants to get a closer look. He keeps his distance, but he definitely has a stubborn streak and does what he wants. D: It is getting wayyy better, though, and I would say he's about 95%. He is far worse when he's with friends (other than Gonzo), too.

As far as I know Phoebe's recall is perfect 9when I say it not her owners), but I'd never chance letting her off in an un-fenced place.

Orson? :rofl1: Nope..........not at all. He is only ever off lead in the house, our back yard, or the empty dog park and that is ALL.

Phoebe, absolutely ANYWHERE. She is reliable to a fault. She is never on lead out in our yard, front or back. She often lays on the front porch when we sit out. She doesn't wear a lead to the car or back to go places with us either.

That girl has stopped in mid chase of a squirrel to come when called! She was chasing a squirrel in the side yard and got close to the road, I yelled "STOP" and she never missed a beat............made a hair pin turn and came flying right back to the porch. So yes, I would trust her walking in down town Chicago off lead if there were no laws against it.

The girls are all pretty good off leash. Keira's recall is at about a 95%, and Dance's about a 98%. Spring's is at about 90%. People distract her easily and she's constantly looking for a new family to go home with at parks, haha. She's getting there though, and if I run the opposite direction she comes as quick is possible so it's not a problem.

Winston's recall is almost non-existant some days, and other days he's great. We've tried to work on it since we got him, but he's far from the most intelligent dog in the world and doesn't learn things very well.

None of them are ever allowed off leash in an unfenced area except for Dance who is allowed at my Aunt's acreage where she just hangs around the house with us.

Nova's still working on it. She goes through phases where coming to me is exciting and rewarding...and then other phases where it just doesn't appeal.

I think she's gearing up for her "I don't hear you" older puppy stage, though. She's much more inclined these days to look at me, look at where she wants to go...and just wander off wherever she pleases.

And she's less likely these days to actually follow me if I run away from her. It worked when she was REALLY young, but now she's like "Ok, mom. You go for a little run. I'll catch up when I'm done over here..."

She's still a baby though. And I haven't put as much work into it recently as I should. I'm confident that her lack of reliability is a lot more about me slacking off than her.

Nope, not at all.

Sierra HAS recall, and is excellent on the longline when there is no distractions, but I absolutely do not trust her around any form of distraction period. So no, she NEVER gets off leash time.

BAHAHAHA.
Off leash? What's that?

OH!
Yeah. Nope.
ABSOLUTELY NOT. In our own fenced in yard? It depends on what she is doing when I call her. If the neighbors' dogs are out, no, she's awful about it. It takes her flirt pole, or an act of GOD to get her to come to me when the neighbors' dogs are out.

Due to her dog aggression I do not let her off leash in public.

If all the dogs are in the backyard, YES. They ALL come when I call them. When I tell them to come in, or if they are barking as a pack at the neighbor's dogs and I tell them to quiet and come in, they will 100% of the time come to me. But in strange places its different:

Bjorn I would say is my best off leash dog. If he even hears "Bj..."" he comes running to me. And he never goes more than a few feet ahead of me on hikes, and stops right ahead and waits for me to catch up. He always turns around to make sure I am still there even on leash. Even if he is fixated on something interested he will stop and come to me.

Cartman has proven to be horrible off leash when hiking, but not at the dog park. At the dog park he comes the second that i call him. On hikes, there are just too many interesting smells..and he sees small animals he wants to chase. So I can't trust him off leash on hikes/at the river. he completely ignores me. It doesn't matter if I am screaming his name, and running after him..he still ignores me.

Harry-He plays fetch 24/7, and I can get his attention..but he won't actually come all the way to me unless hes bringing a fetch toy over. And even then, when the fetch toy is in my hands, he runs the opposite direction cause he thinks I am going to throw it. .But I completely trust him off leash.

Peanut-He is okay off leash, unless something is distracting him (Cat, small animal, bug.), And I have to be really, really stern with my voice to get him to come to me. But if nothing is distracting him, he comes right away.

Bob-Hes a very under socialized dog, so when he is outside of the house he is a very timid and anxious dog. So he doesn't go far from me to begin with. Still working on that though.

Daggett-If she is in my mom's room and knows I am going in there to let her out, cause she can't be in there all day (Even though she seems to think that) then she won't come to me. The complete opposite, she will hide from me. But if i am just randomly calling her, she of course will come (especially if she thinks I have food)

Elliot-If he is distracted, it will take a little bit to get him to come..but he will always end up coming.

Charlotte-She has a very good recall, but she is similar to Peanut with the distractions, and Daggett with being in my mom's room and not wanting out.

Jannah-The second worst recall of all my dogs! She will completely ignore me when she is at the park, and inside the house. She just sits there like "What do you want?".

Reese-Similar to Bob..including being under socialized

Lucy-She won't listen to me unless its dinner time. She will completely ignore me if she is under the covers (which is the majority of the day) and when I took her to the dog park she ignored me the entire time...too much smells. Plus she thinks she is a big dog, so was acting tough with them, which was dangerous for her. So her ignoring me over there is NOT a good thing!

Jet- she has a 110% solid recall. I can call her from 1/2 a mile away and her little butt is running (lol) as fast as she can. (I only say half a mile cause we have lots of land here and I trust her 110%)

Bear- Still a work in progress. But right now, its about 95%. I have called him off scents, playing with Jet, running after something, etc. But every once and awhile he gets a wild hair up his butt and doesn't listen so hot.
