There may be a genetic component to obsessive licking, as with other obsessive behaviors. There are lots of things that can cause it, sometimes even medical reasons, such as liver disease, kidney failure, Cushings disease. (I think) Stress or boredom can cause it. It can be an appeasment thing. My smallest Chihuahua is fairly submissive, I think, just on account of her size. Stress is another thing I suspect could cause this re-directive type behavior. It's like an outlet maybe. Sometimes they just like the taste of salty skin. And in the case of some lickers, like how Dan so colorfully describes Daisy, which also describes Toker, I almost think they're being humorous/playful or affectionate at those kinds of times. But Chulita will lick other things too..the floor, the couch. It's not constant, but she does it a fair amount. It's something where any kind of correction, like, "no," haha....just makes them lick more. If scolded, they just appease you more and that means, lick more. So, I tried using the "enough" which was trained in other contexts, but using positive reinforcement methods, so when they hear that word, it doesn't mean something bad, like, "No!" It has instead, a history of being paired with treats. It means stop what you're doing. And then I need to distract them to do something else.

That would make a lot of sense, I never thought of that. Boomer, who does have Cushings, is an obsessive licker. Though he's been that way ever since he was a puppy. He used to have a bad habit of wanting to lick our nostrils. That was a bad, and gross habit I was glad too see him grow out of.

Now he's even worse about it when I finish jogging and I'm all sweaty. I know he wants to lick me due to the salt, but Cushings might make it even more of an obsession. That's really interesting!

My other two only lick when they are in the mood. Tilly was adopted when she was 6 years old and I don't that the circumstance of how she was raised prior to being adopted out gave her much a chance to show affection. But now, when she wants to kiss you, she's great at it. She doesn't have her tiny front teeth, so when she licks you, she almost gums the tip of your nose...lol

Lucy will kiss if I put my face down near hers, or if I've been eating something greasy she'll lick my hands. She's not one to bowl me over to get to my face though. I think it's pretty perfect :)

With Tyr, it's an OCD triggered by stress. And I think he chooses licking for it's appeasement value. It's also a desperate need for physical contact.

With Morgan, it seems that she likes the taste of ears and noses. (Ewww)

:rofl1: now that is a picture to be seen!!

Both of mine are "intermittent lickers"--lol! Wilson especially --he likes to sit on the top of the sofa, behind my husbands's back--and then he will "sneak" a lick--my husband is bald--so it is quite funny to me when it happens!!

Baxter does not lick people--but he does groom Wilson alot--and I do sometimes have to tell him it's enough!

I do not like getting my face washed by a dog--so I too discourage it for the most part.
I kid you not. If you happen to be in the rocker/recliner, she'll kind of sneak up and crawl in your lap like she wants to cuddle, then she'll get her paws on your shoulders and hold you there while she washes your face (and in my case, my bald head too). You can't get her off because she's pushing the rocker back so your feet ar off the ground and you have no leverage to get her off. Her legs are longer than your arms so you can't even push against her body.

Oakley is the perfect licker, IMO.

He usually gives 1-2 licks at a time...like when he hops up in bed with me, he comes over, gives me 2 licks on the hand or face...then goes & plops down at the foot of the bed. I love it :)

He also does it when I'm just sitting & watching tv...he'll just come up to me & give me a lick, then lay down. its so cute :)

luce needs a tshirt that says "caution: dog can't hold her licker"

omg

she's over the top with people she meets, trying desperately to stick her tongue in any available orifice. she's big on ears. and nostrils.

she licks and licks and licks mushroom. and my furniture. my bed. pillows. the dog bed. not so much herself though. and only very rarely does she lick me unless i ask her for kisses.

weird dog.

I let my puppies lick, but phase it out as they get older. I don't like adult dogs lapping me ... mine will give a nose poke or tiny lick on command, but no sneak attacks or drownings!

Nope, neither one are lickers ...........BUT, I have to say I discouraged it from day one for the most part, LOL I've been around dogs who lick non stop and it annoys me........I don't know if I could live with one so I try to nip it in the bud, LOL

It annoys me when they sit and lick at themselves for too long and I will give them the "tut tut" and they stop. Nothing more annoying to me than being woke up at 2am to the "slurp slurp slurp" of a dog in the room licking their bum/privates. Bleck!
OH god this drives me crazy too. I can't stand listening to them lick their foot or WORSE lol. If I tell them to stop that they will.

But Beezer came to us a licker... it's like his way of feeling accepted It seems. Especially if you are upset with him in anyway he will try to worm his way over and lick you. but anytime you snuggle him he tries to sneak in the kisses. I NEVER let him really lick my face but that doesn't stop him from trying and being persistent :rofl1:

The pit bull will not stop unless you stop her.

Tippy will if she is bored/stressed.

Critter did it to furniture and her paws...like 100% of the available time she could. Now with her meds its down to zero.

I worry when they start licking feet/furnture...so I try to figure out the trigger and fix it.

There have been a couple of occassions where Toker will lick the floor....hard floor, carpet, the rug by the door....anywhere. And she would lick frantically, sort of desperately. Then she'd swallow hard, repeatedly. I asked the vet, "what the heck?" And he said she may have heart burn and to give her some Tums for a couple days. And Viola`! That seemed to be it. But this was a different kind of licking and it was accompanied by her doing something with her throat, like something was bugging her a lot.

Xena is a licker. Hands, heads, ears, teeth, pants, floor. There are times when I'm sitting there and she starts licking at my head with earnest. I swear she's just looking for the chewy center.

OMG yes! But not herself- she licks people. Anyone who will let her and for as long as they will let her. Her favorite victims are little kids- she loves to lick their faces. We have a nickname for her- Licky McLickerton

That's very interesting! I'm going to have to file it away in the memory in case I ever see it. :D

Yes, this happened more than once. So, that must have been how she was trying to relieve the discomfort in her throat. I'm not sure, but a Tum (or Rolaid) lol...did the trick.

Eeeewwwww Dan. Don't say that!....the chewy center. You're gross!:yikes:

Morgan is a stealth licker. He likes to wait around nearby and sneak in a good, wet one when you're not ready for it. It's usually just one big lick-kiss, but he makes it count. :rofl1:

He will also give the floor/walls/furniture a quick taste if he thinks nobody's looking.

If we are playing on the floor, he can get pretty excited and try to pin me down in order to wash my face, but he doesn't usually do that unless I've really riled him up. :p

Sam licks alllll the time. In fact if you say 'kisses' then he will lick you. He likes to cuddle and be hugged to though.
