ok first of all right now i currently own 2 boxers, i love them to death and won't end up getting another dogs for awhile but im allready thinking about my next dog. i have always wanted a rottie and almost got one but at the last minuite i decided to go with boxers cause i was told they shed a lot less hair and some places aren't too fond of rotties like parks and stuff. heres what im looking for.

might just stick with the boxer forever lol.

something with a protection drive, my two boxers really aren't very protective of the home at all they don't care who walks in or out and don't even bark they just keep doing what they are doing lol. i have been around dobies and rotties that are the same way though and ive been around boxers that are protective so i don't know.

something that doesn't shed much. with brushing a few times a week my boxers don't shed bad at all. i woudn't mind a longer hair dog but it can't be a bad shedder.

a dog thats an indoor dog. boxers are and i know most dogs can be.

something a tad calmer then a boxer, again ive seen calmer boxers and ive seen dobies and rotties that are really hyper so not sure again.

well thats about it, i know all dogs are differnt and a boxer might but be the way to go for me, but i was also thinking about dobies, rotties, american bulldogs.

just wondering if i could get some of your opinons.

thanks

Have you tried looking for a boxer from working/Schutzhund lines? Boxers were originally bred to be protection dogs. It's just that many pet lines have had that intensity toned down. If you do find a good working dog, be prepared to do a lot of training. Drivey dogs like that need a lot of training and stimulation.

They might be a bit hard to find, but since you love boxers so much, I'm sure it'll be worth the search.

yeah thats a good idea, and no i havn't looked into that, and i won't be looking for another dog for a few years im sure, training i don't see being a problem cause my dog i got as a pup listens great and the 5year old male that wasn't neutered when we got him (he is now) is a totally different dog and listens great now.

Of that list I like the Rottie the best with the AB next but I think for what you are looking for the Dobe fits you best.

Why?
Rotties do shed A LOT for their hair length. You wouldn't think it by looking at them but they have much more hair than you would think. Otherwise they are fantastic dogs. I used to have them but after my last one passed away at the age of 10, I decided to down size and find a breed with a longer life span.

AB they are great dogs to but if you are looking for a guard dog they are (Mostly) very human friendly and really like strangers. They can be scary looking but that is usually if.

Dobes..Another great dog, less hair and excellent guard dogs. They will have same energy "problems" as your boxer though. They can be full of energy.

With proper exercise and training you can really tone down "hyperness" in most any dog. Getting them plenty of exercise is the VERY important key.

Have you considered some of the mastiff breeds? English Mastiffs are great protectors, generally very sedentary indoors (as adults, mind you - puppies, regardless of breed, are insane) and although they DO shed, regular grooming easily keeps it under control.

Most bully breeds are dopey happy dogs. When I go up to train with my club for bitework, there is a HUGE difference between the seriousness of the different breeds. The APBTs and ESPECIALLY the ABs are goofy goofy dogs. The shepherds seem to be far more intense. So far we have no Dobies or Rotties in club, so I can't comment on them in comparison, but the bullies are just goofballs :)

I usually suggest dobes but my boys having a shedding fit right now so I cna't:p

If you like boxers I would jsut start looking at individual lines. they may all have diffrent drives and you may find something you really like.

It really depends on every individual dog..They all have there own personality. Here are some good breeds:

Rottweiler
Doberman Pinscher
Mastiff
Rhodesian Ridgeback

Two thoughts:

1) please go into this with your eyes open. Boxers who don't mind people on 'their' property are fairly simple to own; a large guard breed that not only minds, but acts on that displeasure, is a much more complicated story. Being a good, responsible owner and citizen starts to require more effort, and a lot of well-intentioned people find they don't want to take the time, with bad results for both dogs and humans.

2) Bear in mind that the American Bulldog, which is one of the breeds you mentioned, is prone to dog-aggression, and you already have 2 dogs.

Pretty much, I personally think APBTs are as human friendly as dogs can get so with that in mind, I think AB are almost like that.

I have seen several around parks and dog events and never met one that didn't like people. Someone I know who lives nearby has one, he never barks or even stands up for strangers who pass by.

I'll second that...AB and APBT are "goofy" when around humans. It is hard to get them to take things seriously.

I own a doberman and they do need alot of exercise, if you are looking for a guardian, dobies are the way to go. You need to know they need at least 2 hours of exercise per day,but with two other dogs it should be easier the exaust the beast.

My dobe is 8 months now and she is very guardian and alert, she investigate every sounds lol. Thats pretty funny, not a big barker but she growl at everything she consider suspect.

i don't think a dobie would need any more excersize then my boxers, think the chances for a dobie not to be protective are as good as the chances for a boxer to be protective, cause i have meet both before.

ive been many many rotts that don't have a mean bone in there body to.

I think I echo those who say to stick with Boxers since you like so many of their attributes already and just look into different lines. Also, keep in mind that even the most happy-go-lucky dog can and will "step-up" if it feels that its pack is truely being threatened.

I would say Bull Mastiff aswell.

They are very very sweet dogs and the size will make people think twice beforing messing with you (even if they wouldn't hurt a flea)
