1st.....Where did you get this puppy? Not many breeders will sell a pup that young.

2nd....If the pup REALLY smells, guve it a bath, but use a VERY VERY mild shampoo on her.

3rd....Yes, Purina Puppy Chow is a terrible food. Try to switch her as soon as possible to a better quality food. Innova, Eagles Pack Holistic, and Canidea are some excellant foods. Here are some really good links to the foods....

Innova Puppy

Eagles Pack Holistic

Canidae

And here is Mordy's site which is VERY helpful with foods......Dog Food Project

Also, the food your feeding now, CAN have an affect on how your pup smells, and how good her coat will be and how here stools are. :)

A lot of things will tell you if a breeder is good or not.....just check out the Breeding part of the Forum ;)

No, none of these foods can be bought at petsmart....on the sites I gave you they will have a part that will let you find a store near you that sells these foods

Someone is a breeder if they bred their dog and it had puppies. That doesn't make them a responsible breeder though. Anyone who would sell a puppy at six and a half weeks (especially a toy breed) is NOT a responsible breeder. Toys generally should not leave their dam and littermates until at least 9-10 weeks and many good breeders keep them until 12-16 weeks.

A lot of the good quality foods previously mentioned can not be found at Petsmart or Petco. If you look up the individual food websites you can find their store locater link and find a retailer near you. Trust me, these foods ARE worth it and do make a huge difference.

You can bathe the puppy, but use a tearless puppy shampoo and make sure the pup does not get chilled! Drying and warmth is essential after bathing a pup that young!

Good luck with your new baby :)

o ya! about blowdrying! how do u dry her?? do u blowdry or just towel her until shes dry?
You can try blow drying on a cool setting far from her skin. It may scare her more than anything though. A good towel drying would probably be best and keep her in a warm room until she's fully dry.

Nah, that's not too many qestions ;)

I would SLOWLY switch her over, take just a little amount of the Purina she eats now OUT and put that much that you took out of Canidae...and slowly take more Purina out and put more Canidae in :)

My pup recieved his frst bath at three weeks old. Bathing them at a young age is fine. If you want to find a good food at Petsmart, try Blue Buffalo. It's the best food they have. :)

Trust me, these foods ARE worth it and do make a huge difference.
A good food will improve the smell of the dog but, since the good foods are more nutrient-dense, the dog doesn't have to eat as much and hence poops less. It should also help improve her coat.

Be very careful with the blow dryer. ONLY use the cool setting and then on, 'low.' Dog skin is very sensitive to heat and same with the shampoos. You can get shampoos made for puppies at PetCo or PetSmart that have oatmeal in them and that's nice. I'd avoid the ones with perfumes in them. The smell can be overwhelming and if it's overwhelming to you, imagine what it's like for the dog!

Try to keep the water temperature at about 100F. That temp is very close to the usual body temperature of the dog and won't be as much of a shock. Puppies and small dogs can be very susceptible to drafts near the floor that we don't usually feel. Try to towel and blow dry as best you can and elevate her crate off the floor for 24 hours to make sure.

Make bath time fun! Get very excited and have a bag of small treats on hand and praise the dog for standing still in the bath. I highly suggest getting a hair strainer insert for the drain before you bathe. You'll find the hair strainers at the grocery store as well as a cooking thermometer to gauge the water temperature. At her age you can bathe her in the sink, but be prepared to have a lot of towels. You also want to get a rubber sink or bathtub mat. Many dogs feel very uncomfortable on the slippery surfaces of porcelain or stainless steel. The rubber mat gives them a grip and makes bathing less stressful. Don't go for the shampoo right away. Get the dog used to the water with lots of praise and a few treats for good behavior. Let her investigate the bathing area. Keep the entire affair upbeat and happy.

You'll want to brush her as well. Look on the shih-tzu websites for the grooming tools necessary to properly groom her. It helps to brush her before the bathing to remove loose hairs and to brush her afterwards during drying. There are doggy conditioners too and if your home has low humidity in winter then you may want to use one.

I assume you've had her to the vet already and the vet checker her anal sacs. If she smells more like rotten poo than dog, she may have blocked anal glands. Ask your vet about expressing the anal glands if that's the case. Sniff around her butt and see if there's a powerful stench and I mean STENCH, not just the usual anal odor. Some dogs have chronically blocked anal sacs which you can learn to empty. The blockage is usually caused by soft stools. Firm stools press against the sacs when she's pooping and cause them to release the fluid from the glands but if her poop has been soft for a while then there may not have been enough pressure against the glands and so they become blocked and inflamed.

Do you use newspaper as a housebreaking tool? I don't know that this is a great idea. I would think she would be learning that inside is the place to go. But then again, I am no dog raising expert.

I would use puppy potty pads instead of newspaper cause the pads will absorb the pee and she won't get pee all over herself as much.

i would also advise doing a lot of reading! especially if raising a young puppy is a new thing to you personally [being in the house with your parents when they raise a puppy doesn't always give us much real experience].
check out the shihtzu websites, as someone mentioned, and i would check out some puppy-raising books and shih books from the library or bookstore and educate yourself as much as possible. also, check out the "training" forum on chazhound. most people find that crate training is the most effective housebreaking tool [as opposed to paper or pad training]. but there is lots that needs to be done with puppies to make sure no bad habits and bad training that happens from day one.

with peeing on themselves, some long-hair dog owners find it necessary to have the hair around those areas trimmed down a bit to keep clean. but a pup that young would generally have it's mom to constantly keep them clean.
