This is kind of weird.

I have a golden lab mix, about 25lbs. I'm guessing about 5-6 years old.

From time to time, he will freak out and get really tense and not be able to walk. He will just sit there shaking and every muscle in his body will be tense.

I would need to sit down and massage him for about 5-10 min before he can move again, and when he can, he will stumble about and drool for another 5-10 min, and then after that he will be fine and run around like normal.

This has happened 2-3x in the past 2 years, but recently its happened twice within 3 days.

Does anyone know whats going on with him? is there anything I can do?

thanks very much in advance!

I agree with a seizure, he needs a vet, especially with them being so frequent lately. On medication seizure dogs can often live perfectly normal, long lives, but you must get him help.

This sounds like seizure activity. Please see your vet.
^^^^^^^^ This

ETA: Also, as a rule it is not always a good idea to trust advice on vet issues on the internet, This forum is very good but some are not.... so in case of lurkers reading and thinking it is a good idea to seek serious medical advice prior to vetting, it is usually much better to play it safe and at least call your vet and go from there;)

go see your vet, if it happens again before you get an appointment, get a camera and video tape what happens, it will help your vet determine what is wrong

Yes definately sounds like seizure.

Could be epilepsy.

Get to a vet!

I agree.

Seizures present in a variety of ways and sometimes owners are completely clueless as to their dog even having seizures.

I would say get to the vet asap. Also, write down exactly what you can remember of her episodes and log down any new ones (what time of day, what is happening during the episodes).
