Gunner is getting neutered Friday I think but is it okay if he plays with the female puppies in his puppyclass Monday before? He is about 4 1/2 months old. It is okay or should we hold back because the two dogs closest to his size that we play with are both females. Last week some people were asking if the dogs had been spayed or neutered yet so I don't know if they should be playing together or not and I've seen some really young mommy dogs on petfinder. At what age can dogs mate?

You can tell when a female is in season. That's the only time you have to watch. The trainer in the puppy class should have anyone whose female is coming into season take their dog home, as it will disrupt the entire class, both males and females.

Dogs can mate as soon as they're mostly through adolescence. It's more difficult to tell with a male dog than a female, because the female will obviously come into season. She will typically become moody, needy, sometimes try to mount other dogs, then will have droplets of blood discharging from her vulva. She will "flirt" with available, acceptable (to her) male dogs, but won't permit them to mount her at first. When she's in full heat, she'll "stand" for the male.

There, that was way more than you really wanted to know, wasn't it? ;)

So, the short answer, is . . . not to worry about Gunner playing with his friends between now and Friday.

Thanks I thought they would be okay but wanted to check so we wouldn't have any "accidents" and Gunner loves to play with them and it helps him get rid of SOME of his neverending energy. The class is only for puppies 3-6 months and I think most are about 4. When is a dog considered adolescent, and when is he an adult?

Dogs are like kids; they hit adolescence at different times, but believe me, you can tell when they do! Male dogs' brains fall out - just like human teenage boys. Female dogs get moody sometimes, silly sometimes and when they start going through their heat cycles you'll know it - doggy PMS.

Females typically range between 6 and 10 months when they begin the terrible teens; males are usually a bit older, and the smaller breeds are often earlier than the large and giant breeds.
