Our 12 week yorkie likes to play outside, but he loves chewing on the grass. I would like to leave him out alone to play (constantly checking on him) but will eating the grass cause any harm?

There are different thoughts on it. Some vets say it's ok, some say it's not good to let a dog do it. I never got a definitive answer.

Some dogs do it when they have tummy aches.. When my dog was younger, she had constant digestive issues.. now that she's "better", she leaves the grass alone.

I would think a little grass is ok, so long as there are no chemicals on the lawn.

Make sure you dont use ANY pesticides on your lawn at all!!

That could cause some problems!

Other then that, its not encouraged.. but it wont hurt them.

Some dogs eat it becaue their bellys are upset like doberooney said.

Its really a mixed feeling, but definately not encouraged to do.
We dont let our dogs eat the grass.. if they start chewing on it, they get told to stop.

My BC girl likes to chew the new spring grass, its sweet so it tastes good. There are several theories about eating grass, one says they chew grass to settle an upset stomach, others for nutrition. ITs not good in quantity as the digestive system cannot break down plant material and it either comes out when going potty or vomiting. My dogs also pick cherry tomatos off the neighbors plants, eat apples, dried cranberries (treats ) and other plant material but only after it is ground up to a slurry. I would make sure that the grass is not sprayed and watch intake if there are problems curtail the intake. If no problems let it be

My dog and cats all loved grass, especially new grass. They never threw up afterwards. I don't think they had upset stomachs, either . . . I think they just liked the taste of it. They especially liked crabgrass. ;)

My guys graze every now and then, not due to belly issues, just cause it tastes good I guess LOL Hasnt hurt them any and if I tell them to leave it alone (when we are on someone's property that I dont know whether or not has been sprayed) they do.

Many dogs eat the first spring grass because it's sweet-tasting. Other dogs eat it to settle their stomachs in the summer.

As long as they're not ingesting chemicals, or eating it in mass quanitites, it should be fine.
