Is $50+ too much for grooming a dog like Tango?

I usually groom Tango myself (actually, I always do) but I'd like to send her in to get professionally groomed sometime in December simply because they can get a lot of undercoat out with their dryers and such. However, I called around and the average price is between 50-65 dollars to bathe, get rid of some undercoat, and trim her a little. She doesn't have a thick coat as it is, she's always free of matts and brushed often, there isn't really much trimming to do as I make sure she's always well groomed (all they'll really need to do is trim a bit off of her ears, though they'll probably touch up the feet and tail aswell I assume), she's not dirty, and she's very well behaved (she's been to be groomed one other time in her life and the groomers adored her). Is the price I'm getting from various places average for a Border Collie mix or do you think it's too much? To me it seems a bit high but I'm not sure so I wanted to get some of your opinions..

Depending on the area that you live in I would say that it is too much. The closest groomer that I live from charges 35 for any dog. one farther away only charges 25.

Well we have a lab and have been qouted $30 for a shedding treatment bath, brush and blowdry. Although when we had our standard poodle they qouted us between $50-$60 for a bath brush blowdry and full grooming (toenails, and haircut).

I'm not really sure if that's a reasonable price or not considering I've never had any of my dogs professionally groomed. I would say if they're not gonna do much more than what you would do yourself if you groomed tango.. why pay the money to have them do it?

I know my aunt has her collie groomed and she pays about 50 bucks.. but her collie is much larger and has much longer hair than tango. Maybe you should post this in the grooming forum.. you might get a better response with people who have more experience with the whole grooming industry.

That's a little steep. The shop I worked at charges $25 for a small breed bath/brush (we call it a bath/brush but it includes scissoring of the feet, ear cleaning, sanitary trim, nail trim/filing, undercoat raking etc.) and $35 for dogs over 30lbs. For extra large (over 80lbs) long-coated dogs it went up to 50, but we rarely got dogs like that to groom with the exception of a "regular" Saint Bernard and a Newfie.

It seems slightly expensive to me, but it also depends on your area and the qualifications of the groomer as well.
At the place I work, the "first time" price is always more expensive then depending on how often you come back the price varies - the more often you come, the less expensive it is - which promotes a regular grooming schedule.

I say groom yourself... I don't understand why people need to pay someone else to care and groom for their dog anyways... Save the money, bond with your dog...what's a little hair anyways? ;)

Im not really sure what area you are in.

Big cities can often charge more then small towns and also the number of groomers in your area can play a role in price.

All within a ten mile radius I have paid 35, 40, and 60 for my toy poodle to be groomed.

I would look around at as many groomers as you can find... if they are all about the same then that is probably the standard for your area.

Good Luck

This is a great idea! More groomers should do this.

My dog goes every 4 weeks and never has a knot on her and we pay the same amount as people brining in very knotty, dirty dogs.

to be honest £25 is nothing ( $50 ) in London - UK.. they take for medium dog anything from £30 and up.. about $60-$70 depening on what they will do.
But this is in the big city.

Do you have a Petsmart or Petcetera in your area? The big box shops charge less. And since you don't need anything major done I would trust them with it.

Plus it's always in a big glass room where you can stand and watch the whole thing if you want.

Justin gets his huskies (one of them being a long coat) bathed at PetSmart for $30 each, however they dont do a very good job brushing them out.
