Hi everyone,

Im very interested in training dogs, i have managed to locate a dog club in my area and the same person also teaches "Ringcraft" which from what i can remember is like basics for possible show dogs? could be wrong.

Just trying to find a good solid base to start to learn from, i mean when i start learning to be a trainer i know that it's best have an open-mind and accept all forms of teaching and training and then decided which suit best etc, etc lol.

I am good with people and patient but my being able to speak out loud is a problem, i feel that by going to this dog club and learing and also taking part might bring my confidence up and again i can benefit from it.

Does what im talking about sound OK? or should i try a different way, for those that know what their talking about i would appreciate any advice or information :) .

I have another 2 years to complete my course and then im hopefully going to be working towards a Adv. Diploma in Canine Behavioural Management (i think that's what it's called). So i should be on the right track... hopefully :p

Nice to hear that your going to be getting a new pup, im sure she'll be a good show quality dog for you.

Im not that particularly interested in showing myself but i could learn the basics from that if that's all that's available to me at the moment. Also interested in Shutzhund Training, my dream would be a dog trainer / boarding kennels offer services for training police dogs etc or something like that... but at the moment it's just a dream :p

If anyone has any advice, i'd appricate anything :)

my advice would be to start hanging out at your local schutzhund clubs meets. there will most likely be people there who do both schutzhund and conformation. get as close to the training director, and actually everyone else as you possibly can. after you hang with them for a while you will start talking and voicing your opinions a lot more often. thats how I got started in professional training.

I don't own a dobie as such yet, as im still in education and working with animals it wouldn't be fair to buy one. I have been too a few dog shows and talked to people who own the dobies. Most of my family are in the armed forces, i had thought about becoming an police dog handler but im not sure about that though, sometimes feel i'd be too soft to be a police officer :p .

I will be getting a dobie once i settle down and have everything sorted and i would like to be a breeder also, possibily :) .

I love dogs and i want too work with them, just trying to find the perfect job :D .

thats cool, I got the impressio you had one already. most schutzhund clubs and trainers are happy to have someone hang around asking questions, and helping here and there. and a lot of the members also do conformation so they have those titles on their breeding dogs too. you could really learn a lot from them.

yeah, deffinetly. you might also be able to contact your local police k-9 unit. some of them will allow volounteers to help with training, or atleast direct you to other trainers.

The local HQ for our police is about 60 miles away from where i live, i do have work experience with my college course so there is a possibility that i could go there if that's where their Dog Unit is but im not sure though.

Good for you, DP! The world needs more compassionate trainers! I got into the biz the hard way, so give me a shout if you start running into problems that I could help with. Good luck!

Hi CreatureTeacher

Thanks for that, i think in quite a way from being accepted by the UK Registery of Canine Behaviourists, i've checked out their website and membership is quite difficult so i've got quite a bit ahead of me. I believe that i could have a influence on people and dogs and i want too work with them so much that i don't see why i can't.

I'll definately contact you for any info, your help is much appreciated :D

Thanks :)

I'm just finishing up a course and am training at my local dog club. I must say I am not at all open minded (no chokers!:p) but it is a rewarding experience and absolutely the love of my life.

I agree there are certain methods that i don't agree with i don't approve of the use of chockers either.

Im just not sure where to start really, do you think it would be better if i joined the police and tried getting in with the k9 unit but the thing is, because it's so popular there's usally a lot of applications im sure and getting in is pretty slim.

I currently work at my local veterinary clinic/practice and i see lots of breeds of dogs and i tend to them and look after then whilst in, it's a very rewarding job, it's experience and the pay's not bad either.

As i live in such a rural area there isn't much here in the way of working with animals unless your a farmer lol, this is why i am sure i would benefit from learning to be a dog trainer/behaviourist as there isn't any around, but im sure me saying that someone will come :p .

Well, maybe if you oprn your own vet clinic. Because you like animals and you are working at a vet now...... it will be very rewarding...... or....... breed german shepherds for the k9 section in the police force. since you live in a rural area, it'll come in handy. but make sure you know what your doing before you dog it.
or..... half time vet..... half time with the dogs. just some idea's. the k9 police force pay lots for a well tempered dog. Get some german lines..

hope this helps

I will never be considered a partner or of any veterinary clinic/practice without being a vet myself and it takes a long time to become a vet, 7 years over here in the UK is the minimum. Also i need alot of experience and money to start a business, also i really need to learn and establish myself first before thinking of anything major which isn't soon.

I know the basics but i need to enhance on them and get as much experience of working with dogs. Your advice is appreciated but at the moment i can only think small as i only have limited knowledge. As i said after finishing my 2 year course im going to be working towards my Adv. Diploma in Canine Behavioural Management which im sure will be a bonus because from what i've been told is that you have to understand the dogs form and function and everything about the dog.
