Indoor Games

So, we already have snow that goes up to Hudson's chest and they are calling for another 10-18" over the next few days. As much as "make Hudson run in really deep snow" amuses me, I think I should find other sources of amusement for the two of us.


What do you guys do? I kind of want to find a bunch of small containers and do 'nosework' type stuff. What do you do to keep your sanity during winter?

Teach tricks, work on playing, nosework.

Mia is small enough that she can go all out running after her ball without me worrying about the house being torn up too.

I also like food toys and food stuffed toys.

I also think I am going to get a dog treadmill once I move for those kinds of weeks.

I break down pieces of obedience exercises like working front/finishes, the spin sit for go outs, scent articles, directed retrieve pivots with Lars. With Ocean I work rally exercises, dumbbell stuff, fronts and finishes.

We've been doing a lot of leash walking lately because the snow in the backyard is way too crusty for them to run and exercise.

Tugging, tossing kibble into a room and having her hunt it down, frozen food, tricks tricks tricks and more tricks, chase, retrieve, letting her try to chase down squirrels in the back yard and more tricks.

Treadmill, tricks, heeling all over the place (up/down stairs, etc). I meet up a few times a week for classes/practice, so enrolling in a group class is a good idea. Oh and more tricks.

Oh yeah we do group classes as well 2x a week and nosework meetup usually every week.

Move the furniture (I do this in the kitchen or living room to create a big open space), then..

- Get the laser pointer and go nuts
- Booster cube for food or kong wobbler
- Kongs
- Hide treats in hiding spots
- Trick training
- Trick/toss (Merlin has to sit and down repeatedly really fast before I throw the ball... I call them "Puppy pushups")
- Throw toys/play fetch up and down stairs

There's a great thing for indoor games called Petcube. It doesn't ship yet, but I think I should preorder one. It's great for dogs that like chasing lasers (mine does it like crazy ) Just like an option...
