In order to be CGC certified does the dog have to be trusted off leash?

I ask because my dog is Part Jack russell Terrier and when she sees rabits, squirrells and other rodents her instinct kicks in and she wants to chase after them.

We know she will never be able to be trusted off leash outside of a fenced in yard.....does that disqualify a dog.

Also what if her hunt drive kicks in during the test (its outside) will she automatically be disqualified.

I'm excited we are doing this but now I'm thinking of all the things that can go wrong

Her classes start in june and at the end of the classes they take the test.

I read up on the CGC training and I couldn't find anything about this

Nope, the entire test is on leash.

I guess they assume that a canine good citizen will be obeying leash laws. :p

Yeah we have a leash law and I would never take her off leash unless she was inside the house or in a fenced in yard. But I wasn't sure and classes are held outside next to a busy road so I got a bit nervous

I was reading the akc info and the pamphlet I have and I couldn't find anything on leash thing

Like Romy said, it is on leash but if she starts pulling like mad at something you might get in trouble, they do have to have good leash manners.

The only thing that is "off leash" is where you tell the dog to stay and then perform a recall - but it's my understanding that it is normally done on a long line, so the dog is not actually off leash. Ours was done on a long line.

AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program

Equipment

All tests must be performed on leash. Dogs should wear well-fitting buckle or slip collars made of leather, fabric, or chain. Special training collars such as pinch collars, head halters, etc. are not permitted in the CGC test. We recognize that special training collars may be very useful tools for beginning dog trainers, however, we feel that dogs are ready to take the CGC test at the point at which they are transitioned to regular collars.

The evaluator supplies a 20-foot lead for the test. The owner/handler should bring the dog's brush or comb to the test.

all on leash. Off leash portions would be in an obedience title like a CD, off leash also occurs in CDX or UD titles.

I think the CGC evaluator would make allowances for rabbits running by. They are pretty cool about those kind of things.

Good luck on your test!
